Navy Fires Commander Eric Rasch Over Iran's Detention of Sailors

The Navy has fired the commander of the 10 American sailors who entered Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and were captured and held by Iran for about 15 hours.

In a statement Thursday, the Navy said it had lost confidence in Cmdr. Eric Rasch, who was the executive officer of the squadron that included the 10 sailors at the time of the January incident. He was responsible for the training and readiness of the more than 400 sailors in the unit.

A Navy official said Rasch failed to provide effective leadership, leading to a lack of oversight, complacency and failure to maintain standards in the unit. The official was not authorized to discuss the details publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

Rasch has been relieved of his command duties and reassigned, the Navy said.

Firing the Exec? What the hell? Whatever happened to firing the commanding officer? Damndest military mentality I’ve heard of. And I saw some crazy stuff in my 20.

Perhaps, but why were our sailors put where the Iranians could capture them? The kind of poor planning and/or execution of their mission has to rest with someone. We’re lucky that we didn’t have another Benghazi on our hands should the Iranians have decided to take our people prisoner put them on trial, then execute them!

Fired? No no no, Rasch was relieved of his command duties and reassigned. So let’s say it like it really is. He was scapegoated and his career sacrificed to protect higher ups, including the CIC.

I think you’re absolutely right. Rasch is an ashkenazic Jewish name. The Navy has a habit of discriminating against Jooos. No doubt Rasch took the fall for some favored officer who had friends in high places. In fact, Rasch took command of the unit AFTER the incident and the original protected commanding officer was placed on temporary duty away from the incident.

I have seen four posts of this story and the comments always include folks questions why the commanding officer was not fired. It seems so obvious.

Navy Fires Commander Eric Rasch Over Iran's Detention of Sailors

Fortunately for the Navy Brass, Commander Eric Rasch's middle name is "Patsy".

Exactly! Wasn’t the training exec who put them there. It was a commander. And very likely a highly placed one. That’s who should be fired. Every bit as shameful as Leon Panetta saying we don’t send rescue forces until we’re sure of the situation. As the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs sat there. And not a peep heard from the likes of Petraeus.
