A STRING QUARTET + 1
SCHUBERT: PIANO QUINTET IN A, D. 667, ALLEGRO VIVACE One of the great professional partnerships in music was between Franz Schubert and John Michael Vogl, the retired opera singer. Vogl started a second career singing the lieder of Schubert, and the two men went on walking tours of the Austrian countryside, dropping in on Friends of Frannie from his Vienna Choirboy School days. The FOFs would put together impromptu concerts of Schuberts music at someones home. This was how networking was done in the days before telephones and Facebook.
Sylvester Paumgartner was a successful merchant and amateur cellist who had a huge apartment that he used for concerts, which became the cultural center of his little Austrian town. In 1819, Schubert and Vogl performed one of their concerts there, and Sylvester had them stay at his place. He asked Frannie to write a piece for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, which was the same configuration as a quintet by Hummel, a well known composer and gifted pianist of the day. (Note that this was a piano quintet with a bass replacing the second violin.) He also asked Schubert to write a set of variations on his song, The Trout, which has been a standard in the German-speaking world for two centuries. At the first performance, Schubert played the piano from memory while Sylvester sawed away valiantly at the cello.
At the development section (4:51), Schubert has the piano playing in the upper reaches of the keyboard while the bass saws away at the bottom end of its register. Its a hilarious moment, a bird singing with an elephant.
This is early Schubert before he underwent the change of style that marked his mature years. Dont expect depth, just fun.

SCHUBERT: PIANO QUINTET IN A, D. 667, PRESTOThis scherzo movement is a lot of fun. The exclamation points from the double bass are a hilarious effect. This is supposed to be a very fast movement, and these folks do it up properly.

Resting and Waiting
May 14, 2016
My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
John 4:34
It was high noon. Jesus, foot-weary from His long journey, was resting beside Jacobs well. His disciples had gone into the city of Sychar to buy bread. A woman came out of the city to draw water . . . and found her Messiah. The account tells us that she quickly went into the city and invited others to come hear a man who told me everything I ever did (John 4:29).
The disciples came back bringing bread. When they urged Jesus to eat, He said to them, My food . . . is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work (v. 34).
Now I ask you: What work had Jesus been doing? Hed been resting and waiting by the well.
I find great encouragement in this story for I am living with physical limitations. This passage tells me that I do not have to scurry aboutworrying myself about doing the will of my Father and getting His work done. In this season of life, I can rest and wait for Him to bring His work to me.
Similarly, your tiny apartment, your work cubicle, your prison cell, or your hospital bed can become a Jacobs well, a place to rest and to wait for your Father to bring His work to you. I wonder who Hell bring to you today?
Lord, our circumstances can often threaten to overwhelm us. Today, help us to see You in all of life. We are learning to trust You as You do Your work.
If you want a field of service, look around you.
In John 4:4 the Greek text literally says that Jesus had to travel throughout Samaria. He was not just going on a specific errand to meet one specific person. His encounter with the Samaritan woman is about more than just His heart and compassion for the individual. It is about His love and mercy for all who are lost and in need of His grace and forgiveness.
