Police chiefs say GOP congressman’s pot comments ‘offensive’

When Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher endorsed the California initiative to legalize recreational marijuana, the one-time speechwriter for former President Ronald Reagan railed against a justice system that spends billions “to try to take care of someone who wants to smoke weed in his backyard.”

“How many women have been raped or people have been murdered by distracting our law enforcement?” Rohrabacher asked last week in San Francisco.

The Orange County congressman’s comment didn’t sit well with Ventura Police Chief Ken Corney, president of the California Police Chiefs Association, a leading opponent of pot legalization.

In a letter to Rohrabacher, Corney said the statements were misleading and inaccurate, noting that marijuana possession in California has been decriminalized since then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 1449. “Considering that the possession of nearly $300 worth of marijuana in California is a non-penal infraction, I am perplexed by your statement,” he wrote.

“I have never heard of a sexual assault or murder occurring due to the fact that our officers were responding to an individual consuming marijuana on his or her personal property, and to make such an assertion is insulting to the brave men and women who risk their lives to keep Californians safe.”

Corney said California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation “currently spends zero dollars annually incarcerating persons found in simple possession of marijuana.”

Somebody should ask the good Chief:

- How much money is spent by Dept of Corrections to incarcerate those convicted of trafficking in marijuana?

- How much money is spent to investigate and suppress trafficking in marijuana?

- How much money is received from the Federal Government to investigate and suppress marijuana?

- How many manhours do all CA departments expend in these pursuits?

- What is the total value of all properties seized in the suppression of marijuana trafficking?

After all, that's all the good Chief cares about.

It’s all about the simoleans. As always. Just call them the City or County Forfeiture Department and you’ve accurately described many police forces. Start calling LEOs FEOs.

No matter where you stand on the issue, when states do legalize MJ, they generally over regulate and over tax it to the point that there is still room in the market for criminals.

So true, just like cigarettes and liquor.

Except in the case of the CA initiative that will allow any adult to grow up to 6 plants for personal consumption.

At 4-8 ounces of trimmed marijuana per plant, that should be enough for ANYONE every year.

And should be enough to eliminate both the commercial and black markets in the state.

Of course CA is a major exporter and that market should sustain for some time to come.

One of the following things is true -- either:

1. The police do not put a lot of effort into enforcing marijuana laws. This could either be because these laws are rarely violated anyway (obviously not true) or because the police assign it a low priority (in which case there's no reason for the cheif to give a rat's @$$ about it) or because the police consider it an easy way to run up their arrest stats (in which case it's time to derail the gravy train).

or

2. The police do put a lot of effort into enforcing marijuana laws, in which case the Congressman makes an excellent point about putting that effort into chasing real criminals.

I guess I’ll have to continue to pack heat in the mountains against growers.

MJ causes ppl to become fuzzy minded and vote liberal/progressive. Doubt this ? Look at the Sanders supporters.....he promises to legalize pot altogether. When you are a pothead , acquiring and smoking lot can become your main focus in life . It drowns nationalism or patriotism and causes a callous stoned lack of concern or interest about American exceptionalism , history or our national future. Lives become focus on how to keep supplied with the best and most stash . ‘Millenials’ have almost completely sacrificed themselves and their personal future to this false and hedonistic god. Look at these pot smoking kids try and talk intelligentlywhen interviewed on TV . Pathetic . Encouraging even greaterMJ use is to assure our national destruction.
Reject this Rastafarian bs fantasy .

Are you kidding? You think people like that manage to drag themselves off the couch, much less understand a ballot and hit the right name with the stylus, not to mention connecting the arrows with a pen?

Let them blow their minds out on the best Mendocino Mind***k they can buy. You'll never hear anything from them except "Hey man, do you have any fritos?!"

I’d say fairly few . Many ,like myself , former 7o’s - 80’s potheads , finally woke up to the error of theirs and see the matter a mindfulness that a never smoked-er could ever muster.
Another replier to my 1st comment suggested that MJ addicts ( and admit it kr not they do tend to be addicts)nare too stoned out to vote . My perseptive exlerience is that almost all the fired up Liberal progressive ‘activists’ that I know or have witnessed DO VOTE ,and are vehement in their voting and liberal progressive ( anti-American )advocacy and support. All these mega rich Libtards throwing $$$ at Sanders or Clinton , or Obama before them ....ALL smoke MJ .
I contend that that any and all candidates running for national office should have to undergo drug and alcohol testing , with results publicly available. At least several times throughout the campaign and at least annually ( random) when IN office . Hint : Hillary , Sanders & Obama would fail . Trump woukd pass. Failing a drug test ,while in office should trigger immediate impeachment proceedings. We cannot have stoners deciding our national fate. We cannot give any breaks about this to those in keadership. 1 strike and they should be out . Amend the Constitution to reflect this . .
For rank & file conservatives that think its cool to get high ;you are making a deal with the devil . Mindfulness and sobriety is by far the best course.
Our nation , our history was nit brought

Our nation , our exceptional history was not brought about by a bunch of Rasta potheads. Our wars have not been won by potheads. Since America started to go to pot a lot has gone downhill. Wars cease to be won .
Most recently because we have started to disregard their drug use and consequently affected thinking , and we elect drug using stoners. .
No more classic example can be offered than 80’s Honolulu pothead , stoner punk , Barack Obama . Look what he and his fuzzy minded Liberal lot soaked logic has done to our nation . And Bill (and Hillary) Clinton before him . That is my indictment .... MJ is evil .sorry....

Another question for the Chief...

- How much damage is done by illegal alien pot farmers in CA forests who are hired by Mexican cartels?

Your entire statement is wrong. It depends completely on the individual personality.

not so. Marijuana use has an overall subtle effect on the brain and the consciousness of those who use it. If you could see it from the perspective that I look at it with you would understand exactly what I’m talking about. Nancy Reagan was right. Just say no
