The GOPe cares more about honor among thieves within the Uniparty than winning.
They didn't want to win might have rocked the "our hands are tied, nothing we can do" mentality in Congress when the GOPe held the majority in both houses. The Republicans say one thing, but they're just part of the same tax and spend structure as the Democrats.
McCain and Romney were both suffering from paralysis of analysis, in which they both simply bought into the line that they were racist, sexist, homophobic bigots. This line, apparently, was very effective, but only because they ALLOWED it to be effective. The Donald, however, has never bought into this line. Like a huge Caterpillar D11% bulldozer, he simply rolls over these attacks, and in doing so, invalidates them.
Herself thought the “woman card” would provide enough cover to simply duck away from this onslaught, but The Donald always had the Trump Card.
If nothing else, The Donald has blown apart the conventional way by which politics has been played in this country since the 1930’s.

Imagine, McCain, instead of mounting a ferocious campaign, actually assuring his voters that Obama and Biden are honorable people from whom we have nothing to fear.
Imagine Romney disappearing in the foreign policy debate, not mentioning Benghazi nor Obama's dismal record, mistreatment of veterans at the Veteran's memorials on the Mall, etc.
What were they thinking?
