this story is a deeper question that unnerves everyone including established, mainstream outlets in a media ecosystem that's increasingly dependent on Facebook's whims: The company's power is vast, and that power is not always deployed in ways that are transparent and accountable.
Mark Zuckerberg has always said he wants to build Facebook into "a utility," and he's arguably succeeded. But utilities, because they're so important, are highly regulated. Facebook is approaching utility-level importance, but it answers to no one not even, given Zuckerberg's control of the company, its shareholders.

Not surprised, but not happy about it. Everyone knows Facebook has become a tool of the Obama White House.
Watch them shutter their digital doors, fill and poison their digital moats if Trump wins.
It’s important to piss off all your stupid liberal friends.
I shut down my account and walked away 5 years ago.
Never signed up. No influence over this American.
Anyway, why post your personal data AND photo for Omar & Achmed to see?
FB doesn’t require you to post anything.
That and all the friend me freaks that crawl out of my high school yearbook.
Killed it 3 or 4 years ago and don’t miss it. I wished I had never heard of it.
That’s the most tragic headline I’ve seen in a long time.
But don’t most FB subscribers do just that? The caricature is of an FBer posting what he/she just had for breakfast.
This `friending’ business is borderline creepy, IMO.
“The company’s power is vast, and that power is not always deployed in ways that are transparent and accountable.”
Unless it concerns their stock, Facebook has no responsibility to be transparent and accountable.
The idea of Unfriending is even creepier.
In college football they had to invent the word “decommit” to describe kids who back out of their Letter of Intent.
The very fact that we had to invent the words Unfriend and Decommit tells you EXACTLY why society is where it is today.
That’s more Twitter than Facebook. Friending is just another name for managing who can see your content. Without it, everything would be public.
Zuk fancies the community organizer concept, wanting to unite the world. His way.
Im not on Facebook, so it has ZERO influence on me.
I still do not comprehend its value beyond that of a novelty.
Communication tool?
I use Facebook and it has zero influence in me. Except as a tool to stay in touch with friends and family who I try to influence to never vote for liberals.
I see Facebook and Google as tools of social control. That ought to be fairly obvious by now.
