I recommend a utility called Facebook Purity.

In fact, Facebook dislikes it so much they suppress the link to its Facebook page ;)

But it allows the user to control what’s on the screen. The ‘trending’ silliness (nothing more than exhortation to groupthink) can be removed altogether. ‘Most recent’ can (finally) be forced as the default timeline option. Many other uses.
