'I'm not just the typical granny': 80-year-old shoots, kills intruder (Sultan, WA)

SULTAN, Wash. (KOMO) - Four shots fired. Three hit the intruder.

It was one surreal moment, says Barb Moles.

"I was just intent upon stopping him. I didn't have any other thought in my head," says Moles. "I just knew I had to stop him."

Moles, 80, was home with her husband, John, and their adult son Thursday night when she says she heard a commotion. She walked into the kitchen and found her husband bleeding on the floor.

John, a retired Boeing worker, had been attacked with a knife and beaten with a crowbar, authorities said. He said three words to his wife: "I've been stabbed."

Barb, a grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of three, walked down the hall and into the master bedroom. She found her .38 caliber pistol -- a Christmas gift from John a few years prior.

She waited behind the door for the intruder to come in. He never did.

“Gufundme” hell.

Sell the perp’s organs on the world market and write her a check from the proceeds and while you’re at it, Get her a couple of hours of range time and a box of self-defense loads and a freaking MEDAL for community service.

I enjoyed watching this story on the local news. Three out of four is a lot better than most cops can do and they're are trained for stressful situations. 80-year-old grannies not so much.

What a GREAT Mother’s day story - I am inspired except for the part where she feels sorry for the murderous thug’s family. Not in a million years would this grannie ever say that. Nice touch, though, just in case the prosecutor dares to consider charging anyone with anything.

I hope she got a “senior discount” on those bullets. Grandmothers should not have to decide between food and rent or buying bullets.

I know this breaks the stereotype, but there are many women who keep their heads in crisis situations better than most men. My wife is a good example, she has very good situational awareness and can always be counted on in an emergency not to freeze up.

She is a retired nurse and I am a retired fire lieutenant. Over the years the two of us have stopped to help at many car accidents and other types of emergencies that we have happened upon before the authorities have arrived. I always start doing what I can to mitigate the situation and she has always taken the role of incident commander. She is very good at assigning tasks to anyone who stops to see what is going on, and gives an amazing report when law enforcement or emergency services show up. She generally has the scene so well organized that she is usually asked to keep it up until several units have arrived. She always says she is not sure why people at emergency situations follow her directions, but they do.

My wife has a laser on the pistol that she keeps by her side of the bed and I have complete confidence that she would use it effectively if threatened in our home. Her favorite firearm is actually her WWII vintage .30 carbine, but her 20 gauge shotgun which also has a laser mounted on it is also always ready to go. I worked 24 hour shifts so she was the one who felt like we needed to join a gun club and get some training early in our marriage.

Why is he an idiot? He’s not wrong. In stressful situations, some cops marksmanship leaves something to be desired. I should know, I’m a law enforcement firearms instrucor.

I think it makes her more admirable. Nobody should relish taking another person’s life, even if it had to be done and it was fully justified.

Yes, she is way more admirable than I am. What I said, however, in no way suggests I am “relishing” this individual’s death. As you say, it had to be done.

Because someone makes a shot and hits their target is easily explained. Their basically pointing the gun as an extention of their finger/hand and not putting a lot of thought into it.

An Officer on the other hand has to think about their shot.

This is a fairly rural area - one main road along a river valley with a few small towns every 15 miles or so. Large problem with meth cookers back in the woods, and house break-ins, although usually with vacant cabins and stuff.

Not a surprise that an elderly woman living there would know her way around a gun.

I recall the fake newspaper article with a picture of an older gal behind the wheel of her car. The policeman had pulled her over for a broken tail light, and saw that she had a pistol on the front seat.

“Excuse me ma’am - is that a real gun on the seat?”

“It sure is - it’s a .38”

“Do you have any other weapons in your vehicle ma’am?”

“I have a .357 under my seat, and a .44 in the glove box.”

“My word - what is an 82-year old woman so afraid of?”

“Not a G**-damn thing sonny!”

Sounds to me like you’re a lucky man. Congratulations on a long and successful marriage.

My wife and I will celebrate our 48th in July. And you know luck is just a word. It requires a lot of hard work and worth every minute of it.

And you don’t know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’. Care to explain why you think I’m an idiot?

My iPad may autocorrect when I don't want it to. But I do know a lot about Law Enforcement shooting situations and civilian shooting situations.
