A STRING QUARTET + 1

MOZART: QUINTET IN G MINOR, K. 516, ALLEGRO

When you add a second viola to a string quartet, you get a string quintet. It was Mozart who made this repertory what it is.

Mozart was gifted at violin, viola and keyboard. In chamber ensembles, he preferred the viola because in those days the violist sat in the center and could be seen by all. Mozart liked to be visible on stage.

The key of G minor was one of Mozart’s magical keys, as his Symphony #40 attests. Here he writes a magnificent movement in sonata format for one of his greatest quintets.

and if I ran into a protestor, I'd probably punch his lights out.

*Sigh*, typical violent Trump supporter :-)

Seriously though, I'm curious why he chose Linden?

Probably because if he chose Seattle there'd be real trouble?

Correct.

Even if he chose Bellingham, there would be real trouble.

Lynden has the fairgrounds, which are big enough for the crowd he will draw. Lynden is very conservative, which makes for a good crowd and police who don't take crap. Lastly, Lynden is a long haul from Seattle, and I-5 northbound at Marysville is constricted due to replacing bridge supports. Traffic is a nightmare through that area, which will discourage Seattle protestors from making the trip.

A STRING QUARTET + 1

MOZART: QUINTET IN G MINOR, K. 516, ADAGIO, ALLEGRO

The finale of this quintet starts with a threnody that contains all the sadness in the world. But Mozart is just leading you down the garden path, and when he gets there, he turns to G Major, and it’s time to play.

A STRING QUARTET + 1

MOZART: QUINTET IN E-FLAT, K. 614, ALLEGRO DI MOLTO

In the last days of Mozart’s life, as his health worsened, his money problems began to prey on him. He had made a vast amount of money and had frittered it away on a fancy apartment, expensive wines and billiards. He had no grasp of the care, feeding and handling of money.

In some of his works at this time, he pulled in his horns and turned to a more conservative direction to make his music more commercial. In this quintet, he turned toward Haydn, a surefire way, he believed, to make money.

Mozart was going commercial. He knew what he was doing.

Commercial? Perhaps.

But it’s still better than the “commercial” music of today! LOL! :-)

A STRING QUARTET + 1

BEETHOVEN: QUINTET IN C, OP. 29, ALLEGRO MODERATO

This quintet dates from the six early string quartets of Opus 18, and Lou was about 30 when he published it. From your many classes in the Publius School of Music, you’ll know what to look for in the structure of a movement in sonata format.

A STRING QUARTET + 1

BEETHOVEN: QUINTET IN C, OP. 29, ALLEGRO

This scherzo movement is based on a short motif that is not much more than a musical hiccup. It shows how Lou was beginning to concentrate his musical thought even in his early days.

Beethoven: Quintet in C, Op. 29, third movement
