Actually in 1976 when Reagan lost to Ford at the convention, he never endorsed Ford. And went on to win in 1980.

I recall that Reagan reluctantly came down to the main stage to join Ford after the final vote. Reagan then gave a stirring, impromptu speech that never mentioned Ford.
