We did live without it for 200 years.
And I can remember when there wasn’t a lake fit to swim in either. They just need to be reeled in with some checks and balances.

Nearly every state has it’s own version of the EPA. Texas has the TCEQ which strikes a decent balance between business interests and conservation. While environmental agencies tend to attract leftist scum to their ranks (and the TCEQ is no different) the fact that the state is more answerable to the people keeps the tyrannical excesses in check.
