The European Central Bank announced Wednesday that it will phase out the 500 euro banknote because of concerns that this banknote "could facilitate illicit activities"

Europe's top law enforcement officials maintain that the 500 euro banknote (worth about $576) makes it easy for criminals to launder money since it's so easy to move around undetected.
In a report last year, Europol said cash was still the "instrument of choice" for terrorists and 500 euro notes were in high demand, though they're not popular for everyday transactions.

I’m truth, they want tighter control of money. Too easy to avoid the taxman with cash.
They are about to clamp down on the free economy in europe.
It’s all about the war on cash. Control the money; control the masses.
Also taxes and seizure for no reason.
As paper money is attacked, a country could have a good industry of printing money back $.90/US dollar (or some such that is close enough people used it 1:1).
Instant 10% appreciation.
This is like the government needs to control the internet to stop child porn and ISIS.
Losing the 500 note isn’t designed to fight crime. It’s intent is that they are slowly moving to a cashless society where all transactions are under the auspices of banking and government.
This allows them to take it in a “haircut”, in taxes, and in fees, at will.
Global outlawing of cash within 18 months.
Then the shooting starts immediately thereafter, assuming people actually want to remain free.
Sorry, but the EU is quickly becoming a top-down, collectivist, fascist enterprise.
I don’t see the EU as our ally. A few countries within the EU - perhaps, but the EU itself is not.
Heard from someone that works in customs that they target cash WAY MORE than drugs these days
And why not. Anything over $10,000 USD equivalent, they can seize at will. That’s a measly twenty 500-Euro bills!
WOD is nothing but a scam to enable police highway robbery! “Policing for profit” is the new MO
How so? The $500 bill went the way of the Dodo long ago, and the Euro has been worth a bit more than the dollar, so it would be a wash at best.
Just as they were in 1775.
They should follow ancient Sparta’s example and use bundles of iron spits as currency.
Has nothing to do with crime.
Everything to do to track and control regular folks money.
They are doing negative interest rates there. If people can keep money out of banks they wont get charged a fee to keep iit in the banks.
In the eu it will not happen.
There aren’t any old 100 Euro notes without security features (metal ribbon). There are still old $100s around without the blue tracking ribbon or the EURion constellation.
Nope, there is an effort to kill off the $100 note here in the U.S. under the guise of controlling criminal activity.
It's more about citizen control. Get rid of paper money, make all transactions electronic, then the gubbamint will have a record of all transactions. No more anonymous currency transactions.

Correct.
Coming soon to the US, that and NIRP.
For about the last 8 years I’ve carried 50s instead of 20s because up until recently a 20 wouldn’t fill the tank.
“Anything over $10,000 USD equivalent, they can seize at will. “
Incorrect. You can take in or out as much as you can carry (or wire)
what you can’t do is not declare it.
