The European Union’s executive Commission is recommending that Turkish citizens be allowed to travel to Europe without visas on short vacations and business trips. […]

The move is part of a package of incentives offered to Turkey — including up to €6 billion ($6.8 billion) in aid for Syrian refugees and fast-track EU membership talks — to persuade Ankara to stop migrants heading to Europe and take thousands back from Greece. …

I’d make three observations about this.

First, the way that they did this....can quickly be whipped up and reformed back to the original way, if things go badly. So I wouldn’t get too excited if I were a Turk or a multicultural German.

Second, if you look at the ease that Germans got Turkish visas (Americans as well)...there never was much fairness to the EU or German visa deal for Turks.

Third, I think the worst that can come out of this is suddenly you get a bunch of Kurds who pack up and leave Turkey and fly into Germany.....instead of walking like the refugees, and demand asylum in Germany. If the Germans wake up in January, and 300,000 Kurds have applied for immigration...it’ll spell disaster for three German state elections in the spring, and Merkel’s political party.

Bad deal for the EU. This was Turkish extortion in return for stopping the refugee flood into Europe. It will be an utter disaster leading to the dissolution of the EU and open borders.

As I recall, it cost me $5 American money at the Istanbul airport to get a Turkish visa and enter the country when I was teaching there. That was for a work visa. It wouldn't hurt the European countries to make it equally easy for Turks to get visas for tourism or business trips. Especially if it got the cooperation of the Turks in choking off the flow of refujihadis.

An Islamist government such as Erdoğan’s has no interest in choking off such a flow.
