Cruz blew it big time and allowed Trump to own the issue and get the Republican nomination, and perhaps the Presidency.

While he was always for securing the border, this was not Cruz front and center issue. If Cruz made that his main issue, he would have fared no better than Tancredo or Pat Buchanan, because it wouldn't have been real except in the context of his full-spectrum conservatism, where Obamacare, control of the size and reach of government and religious freedom would have to play a central role. Cruz was never going to get the northeastern votes that Trump won big, many of whom were attracted to Trump's illegal alien position.

Trump didn't win just because of his out-sized personality, but it allowed him to defy the media's attempts to brand him. Let's see him take this to the White House, and to a newly cast Republican Party where the Romneys and Bushes are on the outside looking in.

The illegals burned their cause big time by their riots against Trump.

People’s reaction to that and voting for Trump as a result may also have hurt Cruz, I suspect.

Herman Cain said today that trump had called him before he decided to run and asked some great questions..

Trump resonates with American people. Everyone else, even Ted , pooh poohed his positions. The voters didn’t

“In my humble opinion, Cruz could have been out in front on this issue for all four years of his Senate term, and could have made it a much bigger part of his campaign, especially his Presidential announcement speech in March 2015.”

Here’s the story, it was a guy on Michael Medved last year, roughly August timeframe. As he was complaining about Trump, he said that the GOP leadership was convinced that they lost 2012 because of their low Hispanic numbers. So early last year, the GOPe got all of the potential candidates together (but not Trump, as he wasn’t on the radar then) and made them vow to keep it ‘toned down’ regarding immigration (of all forms, but particularly illegal) or else. Although not mentioned, it had to be clear what the “or else” was, which was money and support. THEY ALL AGREED, including Cruz, which is why Cruz’s words never much exceeded promising ‘secure borders’, whatever that means.

So there you have it - the most pressing issue to Republican voters in a generation, immigration, and our brilliant leaders made it off limits. Obviously this created a massive opening for a candidate that didn’t need their support, and so Trump swung at the hanging curveball and the rest was history.
