It is multinational corporations that want to reduce the power of nation states and confer free trade along with free immigration.
the more power is taken from taxpayers and transferred to welfare recipients, the more free trade and immigration are allowed, the less power taxpayes and the nation-state governments have. the less power that taxpayers and the nation-state governments have in a global setting, the more power multinational corporations have. the ideal from a multinational corporation is a global one world government with no boundaries. goods are free to flow without tariffs. capital is free to flow without regulation. workers are free to travel from one location to another without fences or visa restrictions, to keep wages low. keeping wages low and prices high reduces individual power relative to that of multinational corporations.
this trend has been observable in the US since at least NAFTA debate and passage in 1992-1993, but it probably predates that by several years if not several decades, depending on the measuring metric that is used.
Someone with more knowledge of history might be able to tie in other players such as the marshall plan, the imf, the bis, and the various continental development banks.
NAFTA and CAFTA and FTAA were already written up and out there as future plans to be implemented in the 50’s. I recall reading about them in Robert Welch’s infamous examination of President Eisenhower entitled The Politician.
