Simple Patriotism Trumps Ideology
WALL STREET JOURNAL ^ | APril 28,2016 | By PEGGY NOONAN

You could see this aspect of Trumpism—I’m about America, end of story—in his much-discussed foreign-policy speech this week. I have found pretty much everything said about it to be true. It was long, occasionally awkward-sounding and sometimes contradictory. It was interesting nonetheless. He was trying to blend into a coherent whole what he’s previously said when popping off on the hustings. He was trying to establish that there’s a theme to the pudding. He was also trying to reassure potential supporters that he is actually serious, that he does have a foreign-policy framework as opposed to just a grab bag of emotional impulses.

The speech was an attack on the reigning Washington foreign-policy elite of both parties, which he scored as incompetent and unsuccessful: “Logic was replaced with foolishness and arrogance, and this led to one foreign-policy disaster after another.” Mistakes in Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Syria threw the region “into crisis,” and helped create ISIS. He described democracy-promotion efforts as destructive, costing “thousands of American lives and many trillions of dollars.” Our resources are overextended, our allies must contribute more, our friends don’t trust us, nor do our allies respect us. He called for “a coherent foreign policy based on American interests.” His interest is “focusing on creating stability.” “We must stop importing extremism through senseless immigration policies,” including a “pause for reassessment,” which will help prevent the next San Bernardino.

True enough.

He needs to continue to point this out, as well as his major theme and goal to

“Make America Great Again.”

I loved his speech. I found nothing inconsistent about it. The “inconsistency” was from the chattering class playing word games. To me it was crystal clear.

“It was long, occasionally awkward-sounding and sometimes contradictory.”

Less than 45 minutes, Obama takes that long to answer two questions in a press conference. Contradictory? That famous little term is because he said we need to be more dependable. He also said we need to be more unpredictable.

Anyone with the sense to pour piss out of a boot knows that meant dependable to allies like Israel, and more unpredictable to enemies.

Peggy, God bless her, is often “too clever by half” for her own good. I loved the speech without any qualifications.

Normal people who aren't overly political and live outside Washington can understand him fine. Only the overly political Washington types can't understand him.

Is Peggy Noonan starting to get it?

The speech was perfect. Everything I’ve wanted in a foreign policy since 911.

Nothing contradictory about being dependable and unpredictable. I can promise that I will come to defend you if you ae attacked, but our enemy won’t know if I am coming by land, sea, or air.

I have been saying that Trump is an "OLD FASHIONED PATRIOT" for 8 months.

Why it tool Stupid Peggy SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long to figure this out, I don't know.

But THIS is the way that men used to be like, when America was an unfractured nation. He is a TRUE PATRIOT and very CONSERVATIVE...in an old fashioned way. Those who refuse to see this, don't know/understand the real meaning of those two words.

Sadly, today, "conservative" is a useless a word as "racist" is, due to over and misuse!

Today in Costa Mesa California, Trump spoke about General Pershing. It was before WWI and we were having problems with radical Islamic terrorists. His troopes caught 50 Islamic terrorists and had them all lined up. The had a live pig. They killed the pig, opened up its guts and put 50 bullets in the bloody guts and rolled them around. Then the took the 50 bullets and they shot 49 of the 50 people. The 50th person they handed him the bullet and told him to go back to his people, show the bullet and tell them what happened to the 49. This show of resolve solved their terrorist problem for 42 years. It this show of resolve that ended the war with Japan. It is this show of resolve that took out the Hitler menace. We need a show of resolve against the modern day Islamic plague of terror. Trump will show that resolve.
