Establishment Senate Candidate Fails to Qualify for CO Primary

The leading Republican establishment candidate in Colorado’s senate primary has failed to gather enough signatures to appear on the June 28 primary ballot, according to state officials.

The Secretary of State’s office says that Jon Keyser, an Air Force veteran and Colorado state representative, has missed the 1,500 signature threshold in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District by 86 signatures, reports the Denver Post. State party rules stipulate that a candidate must collect at least 1,500 signatures in each of Colorado’s congressional districts to qualify to appear on the primary ballot.

The post quoted a spokesman for the Keyser campaign suggesting that the campaign intends to challenge the Colorado Secretary of State’s ruling.

"We are confident that we secured the necessary number of signatures to appear on the ballot, and we will be pursuing legal action to ensure thousands of Coloradans are not disenfranchised," said Matt Connelly, Keyser's spokesman.

Though the National Republican Senate Committee has not yet endorsed in the Colorado Senate primary, rumors have swirled that the NRSC favored Keyser. The NRSC is a known arm of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s efforts to keep incumbent Republicans in power against challenges from more conservative candidates. Politico published a story titled “NRSC chasing new Colorado Senate Candidate,” around the time Keyser announced his candidacy.

Additionally, Kesyer was successful raising funds from Washington, D.C.

According to the Colorado Statesman:

"Following a recent visit to Washington, D.C., where Keyser attended the Republican Jewish Coalition's presidential forum luncheon last week as an invited guest on a day off from his duties, he received $3 million in commitments of soft money to back his campaign, said a source familiar with the matter."

Even with backing from D.C. insiders, Keyser was still unable to qualify for the ballot in Colorado.

You would think he’d have the good sense to use the Cruz method.

Damn voters.

Nice meme, but no dice. If he failed to meet the requirements, nobody will be disenfranchised. He just will not be on the ballot.

Does this mean the Republicans are yielding this Senate seat?

IIRC CO had a surprise outsider Senate candidate endorsed at the (mostly Trump ignored until it was over) state convention. Folks there were raving about him and I don’t think he’s the guy this article is talking about. He might be expected leader guy that flopped at the convention.

Hey, Matt Connelly, how much time did your boy spend off the front range? Did he visit Rio Blanco, Routt, or Moffat counties? T.S. if you think he can represent Colorado if he stays back east.

I believe the individual you’re thinking of is Darryl Glenn and he is currently an El Paso County commissioner. Well liked and respected by those he represents in the county and did a very good job during the Black Forest fire.
