ego’s gotten Trump pretty far along.
It isn’t Trump’s ego. it’s his good old fashioned common sense. He represents a thriving America. Cruz represents politics as usual.

At the Presidential hopeful/Captain of Industry level there is always the element of ego. The question is how much of that is the motivation.
With Cruz it’s huge, much, much less with Trump. Certainly a matter of degrees.
Though never impressed with “Trump the Personality,” I think he really believes he can help right the ship of state. That belief seems to be based on pure patriotism. Lacking any real “political” skills, he’s banking on his ability to talk over the partisan noise like Reagan did and go directly to We the People.
I’ve been on the Trump Train a long time, but not from the beginning.
