The $15 minimum wage hike in California has sent financially troubled UC Berkeley into decision making mode, and "the people who clean buildings, who work in food services or health clinics, says Todd Stenhouse, will be the ones without a job.
Stenhouse, a spokesman for the American Federation of StateChancellor, also said Theres a very clear need for those front-line services. But the question is whether there really is a need to hemorrhage resources on executives.
Nicholas Dirks sent a memo to employees Monday informing them of the job reductions and said they will amount to a modest reduction of 6 percent of our staff workforce.
Berkeley employs about 8,500 staffers, from custodians to administrators. Departments on campus were reportedly also told to reduce their budgets by 10 percent in whatever way they wish.
Some staff members in at least one area, residential student services, were told by managers two weeks ago that they should prepare to be laid off.
This may be the sad but true reality that many working people all across California will face in the coming future due to the recent decision to raise the state-wide minimum wage.
Oh darn.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Gee I just hate when that happens...
Cost of living is high in California.
If $15 is the right number for most of the US, California should be paying $20!
Of course their will be “waivers” for janitors and gardeners at politician’s residences.
And once again, MW workers are finding out that the true minimum wage is $0.00/hr.
I thought about it for weeks, then months.
Then It hit me.
If you pay 100 workers 10 an hour that comes to 1000 bucks.
If 1000 an hour is all your company can afford to spend on workers, then 1000/15 means about 34 layoffs.
I’m a genius!!!
That would be fair.
I foresee a prolonged protest as a result of this action. The students will demand that the job cuts are made across all occupations, instead of just the “low-level” jobs.
Does this mean that students might have to clean their rooms or make their beds?
Reaping what they sow!
I don’t think it could have happened to a more deserving bunch. I wonder what the SJW crowd at Berkely think? They need to DEMAND they get rehired and fire some white people, if there are any. Maybe those brain dead professors that teach this little useful idiots should take one for the team in the name of White Privilege!
Where’s the HA HA guy?
When my son was in college, the minimum wage was raised. Soon after, he noticed a notice in the Student Union: Due to the raise in the minimum wage, all food and beverage prices have been raised to meet our increased costs. We trust that you will understand.
As an architect, who took economics and business courses on his own, he enjoyed how his fellow liberal students squirmed over this unfortunate turn of events.
Except 1000/15 = 67.
People like BOR don’t realize that labor can be priced out of the market. Why is it that Europe has youth unemployment in the 25% range when times were good? We want this here also?
A $15.00 minimum wage is the beginning of the culture of unemployment.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall when the managers told the firees that their jobs were gone because they cost too much after they got their raise. What’s the old saying? ......one step forward, two steps back. In this case the two steps back are right off the cliff.
Oh, my, look at the Bah-humbug echoing from the mouths of the world’s biggest EGALITARIANS, eh..?
Ah, okaaaay..!
Musta been some of those realy PRIVELIGED JANITORS, huh..?
No problem, more for the Kalifornia welfare system that’s all.
