GOP Convention Official Randy Evans: 1,100 Mark Should Be Enough For Trump

If Donald Trump "hits the 1,100 mark," he'll likely easily "cobble together" enough unbound delegates to clear the 1,237 hurdle to cinch the GOP nomination, Republican National Convention Rules Committee member Randy Evans tells Newsmax TV.

In an interview Thursday with "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth, the Georgia Republican who also chairs the Republican National Lawyers Association says the pool of unbound delegates could total between 150-200. Evans created a media buzz in remarks earlier Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program by suggesting coming within spitting distance of the mandated 1,237 delegates would be good enough to win the party's nod.

"You still have to have 1,237 no matter what," Evans tells Hayworth. "It's just my experience in the certain areas we run, all reflect that he should be able to cobble together the extra 137 delegates because there'll be about 150 to 200 delegates floating around that are unbound."

"He should be able to make it if he hits the 1,100 mark," Evans predicted.

Glenn Downs, congressional expert and former House chief of staff, says, however, getting to that final point will prove if Trump really knows the art of the deal.

"In past conventions, if you get within spitting distance, everybody can see, it's like a 'gimme' when you're playing golf…," he said. "This is not other situations, the powers that be in Washington… just despise the idea of Donald Trump as the Republican nominee…. We'll find out in that kind of scenario what kind of dealmaker Mr. Trump really is."

*snip*

"The real question is, are there party leaders, say a party chairman, with a large delegation of unbound delegates who says 'I'd like to see my senator be your running mate.' In those situations, it's pretty easy to cobble together 137 votes."

This is from last Wednesday, but it contains some good tidbits of intel for those of us trying to figure out the convention delegate count endgame.

I think Colorado, and now Wyoming, will pay dividends in Trump delegates. Trump is KILLING Cruz and the establishment he’s in bed with using what’s happening in CO, WY and elsewhere.

Let Me Ask America a Question - Donald J Trump
http://www.wsj.com/articles/let-me-ask-america-a-question-1460675882

Plus Trump is talking about it in every rally speech, interview and press conference. His RSBN youtube rally videos have been viewed 1.6 million times since Colorado. His tweets reach 7 million, his facebook posts 7 million.

Pretty much what I predicted;

Given their shennanigans, if the GOPe comes right out and says the magic number is now 1,100 then they have a plan in place to make sure Trump doesn’t get to 1,100.

I would not like to be the company that holds the ‘insurance’ on the convention hall in Cleveland at this time.

all reflect that he should be able to cobble together the extra 137 delegates because there'll be about 150 to 200 delegates floating around that are unbound...

Yep, all the friendships and good will he has been sowing around during the primaries will be quite helpful come Cleveland time.

Actually, it kinda looks like Cruz is kicking the Trump camps butt. Trump appears to be running a campaign on the cheap and it shows.

So Teds cheating and this report indicates Trump can lockup the nomination w/o receiving the threshold of delegates?

I think Trump should cry out loud and clear against this corrupt process that would allow the nomination w/o 1237 delegates. That would be cheating.

I don't think the GOPe has much power over the first ballot (except in states like Colorado--which is anomalous).

It looks pretty assured that Trump will reach 1,100 before the convention is not much more.

This is another reason why you’re likely to see a Trump/Kasich ticket. If Trump is shy of the outright 1237 number cutting a deal to put Kasich on the ticket is the simplest way to cross the line. Kasich is currently at 144 delegates and that number will increase over the next couple of weeks as he finishes 2nd to Trump in many NE primaries.

Thanks.

Actually, it kinda looks like Cruz is kicking the Trump camps butt. Trump appears to be running a campaign on the cheap and it shows.

That's only the way it appears.

It's not Cruz's ground game that's winning...it is the local and state GOPe who is trying to game the system and stack the delegate deck so that, if Trump doesn't win on first ballot, they can try to stop him on the second ballot.

And even that strategy is not assured of victory for the GOPe. Manafort knows much better than state and local GOPe leaders how to win at the convention on second and subsequent ballots.

That said, I don't think it's going to get to second ballot.

Looking at Trump's momentum going into June 7th, it looks like a pretty clear victory for Trump before the convention.

Good grief. The rules have been in place for a year now. These same rules with minor tweaks have been used for decades. Give me a break.

Cruz just understands the rules and has the organization to make things happen. Trump is trying to win on the cheap. Relying on free media by spouting controversial soundbites.

I'm not against Trump. If he gets the nomination, I will support him gladly. I'm getting a lil wore out by the whining and accusing others of cheating for following the rules. Just distasteful.

You apparently misunderstood what I said.

The GOPee is indeed stacking delegates FOR THE SECOND BALLOT.

It's not against the rules nor did I state that it was.

And it's not Cruz who is doing it...it is the GOPe who is trying to stack the count for the anti-Trump candidate and that just happens to be Cruz.

I did not whine or suggest cheating. You must be looking for a reason to be offended.

Trump has got to be President. Washington DC is so totally corrupt only Trump can start its change. America is in deep trouble with ISIS who will attack on our shores and the devastation will be huge. They are here and it is only a matter of time.
