RAF jets will battle American stealth fighters in mock dogfights over Britain for the first time in the coming days.
British Typhoon fighters will take part in air-to-air combat drills against United States Air Force F-22 Raptor jets.
The contests will be the first time the aircraft have gone head-to-head in UK skies, RAF sources said.
A dozen F-22s arrived at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk earlier this week and are due to stay for practice missions with the RAF until the start of next month.
An RAF source said the allies were likely to fight scenarios at both close visual range, where he said the Typhoon might have the edge, and at longer range where the F-22s stealth was likely to help it triumph.
He said: What you cant see, you cant shoot.
This isnt the Battle of Britain, shouting Tally Ho!, getting behind someone and giving them all guns.
We are launching missiles from 25 to 30 miles away and flying at supersonic speeds.
In terms of long range war, I would suggest the F-22 would have the edge. In terms of a pure dogfight, turning and burning, I think the Typhoon would certainly hold its own. Its two very different fights.
Typhoons have met F-22 fighters in training exercises in the US before.

Is Tom Cruise gonna be there?
what would the next war entail? dogfights or missiles from 30 miles?
Would the better jammers available now render missiles ineffective ? Or are there jammer jammers available too?
I seem to recall Indian MiG 21s with Israeli jammers giving the USAF a surprise during exercises in Kalaikunda .....
Have a feeling we will be coming home with one less than we started with.
The Russians are experts at jamming technology and possibly have “plasma stealth” technology.
Pretty soon “dogfights” will consist of stealth drone missile platforms facing off at a hundred miles separation.
The US is better at jamming technology (I’d also put parts of Europe ahead of Russia), and there’s no such thing as ‘plasma stealth’ outside Internet forums. While plasma state can cause RF not to effectively bounce back (hence the stealth), it is not a viable way of making aircraft stealthy as it exposes them to other forms of detection - hence it only existing in Internet fora.
Any bets...?,p> I guess the Zoomies need some cheap targets for practice...
Will they fly the Mach Loop, and will they be allowed to get low enough for pictures?
The F-22s will still not have the long-promised 40 year old tech of a heads up helmut, while the RAF FGR4 Typhoons do (like most modern fiighters). RAF Typhoons also have voice command.
