I have done the math with my children, and basically re-teach it. I don’t Common Core isn’t for children that can’t learn - it is designed to accommodate teachers that don’t know the material (especially math). A co-worker described her son going to her grandchildren’s school to teach the teacher how to add fractions; the grandchildren described how the teacher added the numerators AND denominators (so one half plus one half equaled two fourths - which is still one half).
I started realizing how bad math teachers were years ago when much of my children’s lessons were from websites as homework; they (with help from parents) were to learn the material on their own, then the teacher would just test them - without ever personally teaching anything.
“We need to send Education back to local and state control.”
I don’t think you want anything smaller than state control; when municipalities control it you end up with hundreds of mini fiefdoms that crush taxpayers (as they do here in NJ). Education is a massive workfare program here, and our school taxes are among the highest in the nation. Our teacher caste is our middle upper class here, especially since the real jobs packed up & left.
