CHINO, Calif. -- A California panel recommended parole Thursday for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten more than four decades after she went to prison for the notorious killings of a wealthy grocer and his wife.
The decision will now undergo administrative review by the Board of Parole Hearings. If upheld it goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who has the final word on whether the now-66-year-old Van Houten is released from the California Institution for Women in Chino.
Brown previously blocked the parole of former Manson follower Bruce Davis, citing the gravity of his offenses and his refusal to fully accept responsibility for his role in the murders of a stunt man and a musician.
Van Houten was "numb" after the parole board decision was made at the California Institution for Women, said her attorney Rich Pfeiffer.
Van Houten, a one-time homecoming princess, participated in the killings of Leno La Bianca and his wife Rosemary a day after other so-called "Manson family" members murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others in 1969.

After being in jail for so long would she be able to survive and take care of herself in the real world?

Yes, indeed. But I also heard somewhere that it costs over $50K/year to keep an individual in prison!
While she originally got the death sentence (voided by our wonderful Supreme Court), she has spent 46 years in prison, shows repentance and rehabilitation and does not appear to be a danger to society. I’m not a great fan of parole, but murderers who have done as bad, if not worse, have served half the time. I’m also not a fan of keeping someone in prison just because a celebrity was the victim as opposed to a “regular” person; hence, I don’t understand why the jackass Sirhan Sirhan is still in prison after 48 years while the multiple Brinks guards/cop murderer Mutulu Shakur got out after 30 years. While Van Houten participated in the LaBianca murders, she was not at the Tate residence on the night of the killings. I am NOT in favor of ever letting out Tex Watson, the main butcher in those “proceedings”.
I never understood why on holy mother earth they weren’t gassed almost right away after their convictions.
It’s more a freak show these days on the outside. She should feel right at home.
Oh Jeeze. This murderess and the rest of the Manson bunch should have been executed years ago. They got lucky and all their death sentences were converted to life in prison. None of them should even be considered for parole. EVER.
I think she does well in prison because she knows that if she acts out it would prejudice her chances of parole.

Leaving anything to Brown will certainly be bad for California, and the nation too.
Doesn’t the governor have to sign off on it as well?
In her favor, she is probably the one member of the group that has accepted responsibility for her role in the killings and made efforts to make something of her life. I hope those efforts are sincere.
However, given the cruelty of her crimes and out of respect for the family members of the victims, I think justice requires that her efforts to redeem her life continue to be conducted from the inside of a prison.

She might even be able to recruit her own followers, just like Manson did in the 60’s. When Manson left prison, the 60’s craziness was in full swing and he managed to find a bunch of brainless followers. If Obama can do it, so can she!
Meanwhile, they continue to imprison a guy in his 80s who wasn’t even there when the killings occurred.
Manson must be so bummed......Obama has succeeded at getting Blacks and Whites at each others throats. Obama doing what Manson could not achieve.
Are they going to keep her away from forks?
