I was in Rome, Italy, at this time last year. The locals everywhere we went were talking about their concerns with the flood of “unknowns” into their country. We even had a tour guide - an archeologist - tell us before we arrived at the Colosseum to not give the sellers in the area any money for trinkets or selfie-sticks, because they were “slaves.” She said they were people who were being exploited by criminals and not to encourage it. She said there was a great fear that “nobody knows where these people came from, how they will support themselves, what they are really up to.” She told us to observe as the local police arrived, these “slaves” would disperse. And they sure did. The plaza became much less populated when the polizei arrived. I told her I thought it was interesting that the Italian populace is having the same discussions about unfettered immigration as we in the U.S. have been having. She just smiled and nodded. This was a year ago, almost to the day.
