Many Western states seek ways to lower high suicide rates [gun-grab pretext redux]

Throughout the interior West, states in a belt from Montana to New Mexico are looking for ways to lower their highest-in-the-nation suicide rates, although gun-specific initiatives are a touchy topic.

In Montana, with the highest rate, suicide prevention coordinator Karl Rosston acknowledges some frustration as the toll rises, including the recent deaths of several teenagers who used guns from their own homes.

“People are afraid we’re trying to take away guns, which is not the case,” Rosston said. “I understand the sensitivity of it, but I’ve got to ask the questions when we have kids who shoot themselves.” …

It’s not the guns dumbass. It’s the “smart” phones and social “media”. I’ve yet to see a gun talk somebody into blowing their brains out with it. Wake up idiots! If a kid finds a gun and blows their brains all over the house, there is definitely a problem somewhere and it isn’t the NRA and guns. Geesh.

A gun is a tool. Just as good or bad as the mean weating.

Yeah, I know, Shane.

But the point is, I’ve known too many suicides. I’ve known suicides using old antidepressants called MAOis and cheese and wine together (don’t ask).

And then a bunch I can’t write here. Worked with young adults at risk In Christian youth group.

Last thing needed is a gun. They are harder to get in NYC but CERTAINLY not impossible, and without that much effort, especially if you want to kill yourself.

A person intent on suicide will find a means. The son of my next door neighbor decided a charcoal hibachi pot in the bathroom was the solution. It worked. 3 charcoal briquets in a small car was the choice for a despondent Japanese TV reporter. Drug overdoses are common too. The fixation on guns is misplaced. Fifteen Tylenol tablets will kill your liver. It's pretty unpleasant and not really treatable.

“Many Western states seek ways to lower electric power rates”

Ya think we’d ever see that headline?

And if they’re so concerned with our safety, how many sanctuary cities exist in those “Western states”?

that’s a new one.

yeah, I’m not gonna float any more ideas out there of the means I saw used, but suffice it to say there are plenty.

Yeah, just pass a law that when people are bummed out and get drunk they aren’t allowed to shoot themselves. Make ‘em beat themselves to death with a stick. Then ban sticks.

In NYC? Six floors and up, swan dive to ground level. Plenty of tall buildings, and older ones with fire escapes. Broken glass across the forearms...or neck, step in fromt of a train/bus/taxi...

City folks have plenty of ways to go. If someone is inventive enough out west, they can find a way, too. Guns aren't the problem, the absence of coping skills is the problem.

If you want to die in NYC, you’re a walk away from a neighborhood that sells guns, or a friend away from onw who sells them or can get them.

When NYC goes full Fascist they will find a lot of guns in people’s houses and even on them.

The choice in Palo Alto is Caltrain. And yet, not only is there no serious discussion of ceasing Caltrain service, the state is borrowing billions for high-speed rail... do they not care about the kids?

I;m just saying that if (hypothetically speaking) guns were removed from NYC, every one, that there are plenty of other ways people would find to off themselves.

For the inventive, there is always a way. The odd part is that if they are that inventive, chances are they can find a way out of whatever else is a problem, and they won’t feel the need to use a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Too many people are living in the moment, and dying in it, too.

The high suicide rate is not a function of firearms. It is a function of the weather. It really is and studies will support this.

From April to September the sun shines, the rivers flow and it is a wonderful place to be. In October, the rivers freeze, the sun does not shine but a few hours a day, it is cold cold cold outside and you are ass deep in snow. In these times one retreats to his home and hearth. That is when the depression starts.

That is also when they kill themselves. A gun is convenient but if there were no guns alternative measures would be taken.

I knew a guy who killed himself for losing 15k in atlantic city.

it was a third of a year’s salary.

but there were lots of years left in his life.

Were, being the key word.

I’ve let a lot more than that slip though my fingers because of greed.

I’m going to kill myself because of my own greed? What’s the point. Life goes on.

I knew a boy that killed himself to be with his brother, who had died in a car accident. He didn’t know any better, I suppose. But now that I think about it, It is very possible that a doctor prescribed him meds whose side effects include “thoughts of suicide” ...

Blaming guns to me, is an obvious passing of the buck.

What are the odds that messing with the brain’s chemistry can lead to suicidal thoughts? /s

I’m sure they help some people. One out of five, if the depression is severe, is the most recent statistic.

But don’t tell big pharma or shrinks that. they wont like it.

poor kid.
