The armistice was nigh but the details were still being worked out. The German warships were instructed to report to Scapa Flow. They were manned by their German crews for months while they waited for the final draft. In the meantime, the Germans came up with a plan to scuttle all the ships on the same night. The naval aspect of WWI was fascinating with Winston Churchill playing a huge role.
Anyone who has not read Robert Massie’s “Dreadnaught” and “Castles of Steel” is missing one of the great pleasures in naval history.
