POLITICAL correctness is stifling free speech on Australian university campuses, a policy think tank has warned.
And students hurt feelings are being prioritised over academic debate, says the Institute of Public Affairs.
Sarcasm and ridicule have been banned at several campuses including Western Sydney University, while terms like sportsmanlike or the disabled are deemed inappropriate at Newcastle University.
Students are being persecuted over their political views, while growing policy guidelines on acceptable speech are curtailing academic freedoms, research fellow Matthew Lesh says.
The institute is conducting an inquiry into the issue, and has released a number of cases to The Daily Telegraph following the furore sparked by revelations the University of NSW was now requiring students use the word invasion instead of settlement to describe Australias history.
Mr Lesh called for university guidelines and policies restricting intellectual freedom to be abolished.
We have policies that now forbid sarcasm and making people feel uncomfortable, Mr Lesh said. We need to have a public debate about this.
Universities depend on free and open intellectual debate. It is impossible to develop and discuss ideas in an atmosphere where certain concepts are restricted.
Other cases highlighted by the IPA include:

It’s no wonder the Muzzies are kicking our asses. The west has become sissified.
The insanity is worldwide.
They need a good conservative bulldog law firm to fight these PC cases and sue, sue, sue.
This is why we need Trump so bad.
Well I think it's still there despite administration's best efforts to stop it. The two I know of is KU's "Rip his ______ head off" and Bama's "We just beat the Hell out of you."
The thing I find amazing about political correctness is the fact that it has swept the entire western world in what amounts to the blink of an eye.
Political correctness has progressed trough the western world like a fast spreading, highly contagious virus that cannot be stopped.
It is difficult to understand how a billion or more people in the most advanced countries on the planet have all lost their ability to reason and make factual value judgements in such a relatively short period of time.
I guess “fracking retards” is out too.
The University system has come to a fork in the road:
Is indoctrination more important than advancing learning?
For a good while it was a little of both, but one now appears to crowd out the other.
The University system appears to be choosing the former path —that indoctrination is more important than learning.
As it becomes more and more clear that The University Experience(outside of STEM) is almost totally indoctrination, more students will opt out totally.
First men, later women.
The term disabled is now offensive?
I remember when disabled was introduced to replace terms such as lame and crippled.
So a term which at one time was selected to replace outdated offensive descriptions is now itself considered outdated and offensive???
And don't forget "handicapped."
And in answer to your question: Yes! It's an example of a well-documented socio-linguistic phenomenon known as "pejoration" or "deterioration" (antonym: "amelioration").
Regards,

Several years ago the UA administration attempted to put a stop to “Rammer Jammer” Big fail:)
They did stop playing “Dixieland Delight” in Bryant-Denny during timeouts though. The fraternity and sorority students created “alternative” lyrics to the song, which would make any sensitive snowflake need their smelling salts. VERY un PC.
The university let them sing their version for a few years, until, during the 2014 Iron Bowl, they sang it much too loud and it obviously wasn’t just the students either. The fans were yelling 2 particular words in the song with particular gusto, which had to do with Auburn. I’ll let you guess what they were:)
Sensitive snowflakes also wouldn’t survive at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.
The problem is they are now the bull on the block and no one is going head to head with these parasites who make these rules and laws
