"The interview you just did is as good as I have ever seen Ted Cruz," Gingrich remarked, referring to the Texas senator's interview earlier in the program. "He was clear, he was vigorous, he was prepared to be combative, but at the same time, he was getting into big issues and big ideas."
Predicting that Cruz is "going to do well" in the Wisconsin primary on April 5, Gingrich added, "and this ought to be a wake-up call to Trump, that he had better rethink some of the underlying patterns of his campaign."
He also offered some advice for how Trump should have handled the situation after an anti-Trump super PAC posted what he called a "truly stupid" image to Facebook featuring Trump's then-girlfriend posing nude for British GQ in 2000.
"The answer was simple: Melania was a supermodel on a professional shoot for a very famous magazine. Hes very proud of her, and shell be a very beautiful first lady. Now, if he had just said that and moved on, then the Cruz campaign would have looked stupid, the issue would have been over. He would have seemed more disciplined and pleasant and a gentleman, and instead, he gets down into this mud that I think really has hurt him," Gingrich said.
But he wasn't done yet with his words of caution, warning that the Trump campaign ought to wake up to the reality of the situation.

“Callista & I do not approve!”
I saw this interview. Newt is right. It would have been smarter for Trump just to say that he thought it was a beautiful photo of his wife. It would have made Cruz ( or his PAC) look stupid for trying to start something in Utah where Cruz was way ahead anyway.
Interesting. As I recall many Freepers savaged Callista Gingrich in 2012.
The Melania ad was a preemptive strike to allow the Cruz campaign to frame the NE story as retaliation. He has done nothing to clear his 'holy' name except blame everything on Trump.
Cruz should prayerfully consider ending his race.
“Cruz should prayerfully consider ending his race. “
You wish.
Unlike Newt, at least an ex-wife isn’t crawling out of the woodwork to condemn either one of them.
So wouldn’t it still have been smarter for Trump just to say he thought it was a beautiful photo of his wife who as a model was on a professional suit. The whole mess would have died there.
The logic of it all seems so simple that it makes you wonder who is advising Trump? Only that fat bastard I keep seeing on CNN?
Yes, in hindsight ... it would have ...
No, Jeff Roe would have just stepped up the attacks.
What was really stupid was when Newt said he was going to run a positive campaign and allowed himself to be carpet bombed out of the race.
It is uncertain whether anyone advised Trump what to do about the photo or if he listened to them.
I think this would have been true if it was just a comment.
When the picture is circulated as an attack ad and in fliers handed out at the campaign office there needs to be a more significant blowback to Cruz to reign in his PAC by disavowing the ad and setting the tone for his campaign.
He want attack....he’ll just go back to supporting his buddies in the Democrat party...he has a real fondness for Nancy, Harry, Chuckie, and Hillary.
NY values I guess....!
Goody. Cruz getting WI is a given. Enjoy it because it will be one of the last.
If Jeff Roe decided to do that it would make Cruz look very bad indeed. Instead Trump tweeted a picture of Heidi Cruz ( who is not a supermodel) next to Melania implying that she is ugly... making Trump look pretty shallow. It was bad optics for Trump who could have made Cruz look like the low life.
Newt is 100% right. That response would have been perfect and Cruz would have looked like an ass.
Opportunity lost.
Trump either needs new advisers or he needs to be more thoughtful in how he responds. He's on the big stage now.
I say that as an avid supporter. I'm still voting for him in my April 26 primary but I'm concerned that other potential Trump voters are not as forgiving as me.
I want both TC and DT to end the scum flinging and get the focus back onto OblaBla, Hill, and our shrinking economy.
