Supreme Court split over teachers' dues delivers win for unions

The Supreme Court split 4-4 Tuesday on a challenge brought by public school teachers who objected to paying union dues, delivering a big win for the unions – in the first major case where the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s vote likely would have proved decisive.

The California teachers in the case had challenged a state law requiring non-union workers to pay “fair share” fees into the public-employee unions to cover collective bargaining costs.

The court, with its split decision, left in place a lower court ruling favoring the unions.

The result is an unlikely victory for organized labor after it seemed almost certain the high court would rule 5-4 to overturn a system in place nearly 40 years. The court is operating with only eight justices after the death of Scalia, who had been expected to rule against the unions.

The one-sentence opinion Tuesday does not set a national precedent and does not identify how each justice voted. It simply upholds a decision from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that applies to California and eight other Western states.

Scalia would have protected the teacher’s rights. Merrick Garland would have gone with the unions. So sad the SCOTUS has become nothing but a political tool of the Left.

If those wascally Wepublicans would have accepted Bammie’s nominee, the union thugs could have won 5-4.

Most are so overpaid, it’s pathetic. But it is all about the dems.

Scalia’s “untimely” death came right on time, it seems.

I hope that Trump can find a way to ban or incapacitate these union vermin, but he has a lot of GOP-e legislators he’ll have to intimidate.

This was predicted. Too bad. The unions will now be donating even more money to democrats. Public employee unions are right up at the top of the list of our country’s enemies.

Why doesn’t the MSM ever comment on the hard line leftist on the Court? They never even wonder if one of the leftist might defect and join a conservative majority. Never. (Of course, we all know why. Sorry. Just ranting.)

The real reason isn’t that the MSM is in bed with them as you imply (they ARE) but the real reason is...the MSM, and other liberals don’t see them as...hard line leftists.

As far as they are concerned, and it is the indisputable truth of fact to them, is that they consider them...centrists and moderates. Even liberal moonbats like Rosie O’Donnell and the other creatures on programs like “The View” are considered moderate.

That is why they view any conservative as so far to the right of the political spectrum that they view that person as being a step away from falling off the scale.

In their own pea-brains, it all makes logical sense and everything fits.

It is why, we as conservatives, make our biggest mistakes when dealing with liberals by accepting their basic premises (which are flawed) and instead battle them on the extensions of those premises instead of steadfastly refusing to accept their flawed fundamental premises.

Thanks, rlmorel. “. . . but the real reason is...the MSM, and other liberals don’t see them as...hard line leftists.”

Oh, you must be talking about ABC’s “news journalist” George Stephopoulos (Former Clinton aide), PBS’s Bill Moyers (former LBJ press secretary), MSNBC’s Chris Matthews (Pres. Carter’s speech writer and Tip O’Neil’s long time chief of staff, PBS’s Cokie Roberts (daughter of a Dem. Congresswoman and Dem Congressman), PBS’s Gwen Ifill (Dem. and simply certifiable), or any number of other ‘useful idiots’ of the left? These are just a few.

That we can even call these propagandist “journalists” or “news reporters” shows how fall down the road to ruin we have traveled.

It makes me sick.

Utter tyranny. Is there another non-profit organization, say the National Pro-Life or the NRA, that the supremes can FORCE people to be members? I mean, both organizations are for the safety of children.
If people find value in joining a union, they would be lining up for miles! Obviously, that’s not the case.

“If those wascally Wepublicans would have accepted Bammie’s nominee, the union thugs could have won 5-4.”

The union thugs won anyway. This is why it is important to vote in the general election for whoever wins the Republican nomination. We know that Clinton’s choice will be to the left of anyone Trump, Cruz, or even Kasich would nominate.

Makes me sick too, oldplayer.

Me too. I stopped watching television back in the mid-nineties because it used to irritate me so much, but they haven’t changed.

Same old song. Heck, Walter Cronkite was the biggest partisan leftist there was, and he was considered by most people to be a completely middle of the road, moderate and reasonable man. He was a “real” journalist, they say.

Yeah, he was real enough not to let people figure him out.

So four liberal justices again checked their brains in at the door.

I didn’t read the article. Let me guess...Kagan, Sotomayer, Stevens, Ginsburg.

Do I get a prize?
