Actually, the Belgian police released him because they didn’t have sufficient evidence in this case although they said he remains a person of interest.
Don’t trust the NYT’s reporting.

I just saw a brief clip of him walking near the other two terrorists but, he looked like he was with them. There was something about the way he walked, like he was in tune with their movements but in a very subtle way.
Great. These are the brilliant people we pay to protect us.
I noticed something weird on the nightly news!
They aired the clip of the three terrorists in the Brussels airport, especially the “guy in the hat” that they’re so hot to find.
I thought the guy’s nose looked lighter than the rest of his face. Then when I saw the glasses he was wearing ... it hit me.
The guy is wearing a fake nose and glasses. I guess they clipped off the mustache, but the nose and glasses looked definitely fake.
The video looks too blurry to tell for sure - maybe.
