Ship Photos of the Day – Zumwalt Returns from Snowy Sea Trials

The future guided-missile destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) returned from Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after completing its second round of sea trials off the coast of Maine.

Why is every surface ship a Destroyer these days? The Zumwalt looks Cruiser-ish to me.

because Destroyer sounds so cool and lethal, and well, anything that even sounds like Cruz, especially around here is just to be detested.

It's not a target if you can't get a lock on it.  Flat surfaces bounce radar off to the side and not back at the enemy.

Never could figure out the return to the antiquated ram bow, which the Navy dropped on battleship designs in 1917 in favor of the cruiser bow.

Radar reflectivity is reduced for cruise missiles coming in at low altitudes.

But! How will it respond to major storms?

The naval architects who designed this monstrosity must have been thinking about fighting Star Wars battles in the heavenly ether.

I'm surprised it didn't turn turtle in the fist heavy sea encountered.
