NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) and the U.S. Navy announced on Wednesday the discovery of the wreck of USS Conestoga in the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary in California, solving one of the greatest maritime mysteries ever in U.S. Navy history.

Check the guns on the deck below the bridge. I think the Navy sailors of 1921 would not have surrendered to a bunch of Iranian peckerheads without a fight.

I notice the crew was integrated. Perhaps those men were cooks, or stewards; or maybe the color bar wasn’t quite so absolute as we have been led to think?

Wasn’t it Wilson who segregated the military after slow progress made over the years after the civil war? Just a guess, but the picture with black seamen may have been before the Wilson Presidency?
