State Cancels Auto Show

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office has cancelled its annual Vehicle Show and Swap Meet due to the state budget impasse. The event, held in downtown Springfield near the capitol building, usually costs around $18,000 to put on, but is being postponed this year to save money.

The show usually draws about 300 entries from car enthusiasts around the state and attracts more than 1-thousand people. The show has been around since 1949 and featured cars, trucks, motorcycles, hot rods, tractors and even recreational vehicles. A spokesman for the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office says it’s their hope the show will return once the budget impasse is settled. Anyone who already sent in a check for the special-event license plate for the show will have their checks returned.

The state can't even scrounge up a relatively measly $18k. I've been going to car shows big and small for 30+ years. A show that draws over 300 cars in the middle of a town the size of Springfield, could easily draw over 10000 spectators with $$$ to burn, particularly at the local restaurants and bars and the state could actually turn a profit from these venues.

The state of Illinois has no budget. They can’t even pay for bullets for the highway patrol. So screw the car show - even at $18,000.

This is what happens when Dems run things.

Springfield is Chicago’s bitch. If the affirmative action voters in Chicago want to keep Springfield from having a car show they can do it. Even the livestock exhibition facilities in Springfield are suffering due to Chicago’s influence, aka the Democrats.

Why is a state government putting on an auto show, anyway? I’m sure someone with a little business sense could find a way to come up with the money, between entry fees, admission charge and concessions, maybe even a raffle.

Gradually the federal government and many state government follow the same path.

They take more money from the economy every year.

So they spend more money every year.

Each year they spend a bigger and bigger percentage of the money on political correctness, welfare, handouts, freebies for illegals and other moochers.

They spend less and less on the things that serve real taxpayers and their legal and constitutional responsibilities.

Illinois doesn’t have $18 K for this annual even but I bet they allocate many, many times that amount on foolish politically correct activities.

That’s what I was thinking too - get the local businesses in on it.

Tax rate of 10% with 2,000 people, it will take everybody spending $90 to recoup it. AND - if it takes $18,000 for the state to do it, I bet the locals could do it for $1,800!

Our local Chick Fil-A and Hardees put on cruise nights every week, and the Mgrs are very happy with how they impact their bottom line on those days.

There’s a 24 hr diner not far from me named Herbie’s that has a “Bug-In” for VW enthusiasts weekly during warm weather for the same reason.

You can damn well betcha they can find a $100K for a Gay Pride convention or pay a ton of over time cash for cops and EMS to be on hand for a Black Lives Matter demonstration.

The state should not be funding this show. And at $18,000 for a show that attracts 1000 people, you have a per person cost of $18.

This is why a gov’t should not do anything that involves money or thinking. 1000 people probably spend at least $100 a day on hotels rooms, food, transportation, etc. So, the bureaucrats pissed away several hundred thousand dollars to save $18K. I’m surprised the can breathe on their own.

For only 1000 people? Not worth the trouble.

“The state can’t even scrounge up a relatively measly $18k.”

Send TWO Dreamers home and you’d free up enough money for it.
