Donald Trump's type of voter found in big numbers in Pennsylvania

A lifelong Democrat, Ed Toth describes himself politically as an independent.

The 60-year-old health-food store owner voted twice for Barack Obama, but he also voted in 1984 for Ronald Reagan.

This year, fed up with both parties, the North Whitehall Township resident is all in for Donald Trump, switching his registration from Democrat to Republican so he could vote in the primary.

"He's been successful," Toth said. "He says he wants to make America great again. I'm all for that."

If Trump is the Republican nominee, he could benefit in Pennsylvania from a sizable contingent of independent-minded, white, working-class voters.

The catch? In recent years, fewer of those voters have consistently shown up at the polls, making it difficult to predict their impact in November's general election. So far in the primaries and caucuses, they've been coming out for Trump, who has won 19.

These voters can be found in significant numbers in Midwestern and Rust Belt states, including Pennsylvania. Some, like Toth, are former Democrats who already have switched or plan to switch their registration to Republican.

Nearly 55,000 Pennsylvania voters switched registration from Democrat to Republican this year, about double the number of Republicans moving the opposite way. That's an uptick in what had been an ongoing trend of the state Republican Party's gaining former Democrats.

So I'm thinking sometime between 1984 and 2008 this guy had a lobotomy. Still, I appreciate his support for Trump.

These articles are like Lucy, Charlie Brown and the football. Every four years I read the same story about how Pennsylvania may go Republican. Its a teaser every time. The Philadelphia voting machine makes damn sure they go democrat.

I eagerly await another Ted lecture about how middle America are a bunch of disengaged low-info knuckle-draggers who are just too stupid to see why globalist crap like outsourcing and cheap labor are good for America.

Enjoy it. My first one was for Reagan and I have had to support a long, sad and depressing list of GOPe loosers ever since.

It’s my greatest hope that Trump spends his money on watching the polls and bringing lawsuits against the corrupt districts. These are districts with 110% dem voter turnout.

I hope and think all these anti-Trump types will come home if Trump gets the nomination. My son is about 60% of the way through his military career and one of these never-never types regarding Trump.

Trump hasn't been my first choice, and mine still remains a long shot. If Trump is the nominee, not only will I vote for him, I will campaign on his behalf.

My son is an example of the never say never school. As Trump has edged closer to the nod, my son has only said he wants Cruz to win.

Anti-Trumpsters have no rational response to the argument that to be anti-Trump is to be pro-clinton when push comes to shove. I think that is the argument that has my son saying never-well-maybe.

If Trump gets the Romney voters plus the Reagan Democrats he will win in a landslide. At that point, I hope Ann Coulter is right, and she seems to have softened her tone against Cruz lately.

All this attitude softening is what convinces me that Republicans will vote for the Republican who gets the nomination.

I’m talking about November. Trump is the GOP nominee in all but official name. These articles about democrat crossovers are only relevant for November.

Pennsylvania will drive a steak in the heart of what is left of the Rino Gope.

PA won't have nearly the effect you might think it will. Although PA has 71 delegates, by rule 54 of those delegates elected by Congressional District will go to the convention unbound - only the 17 statewide candidates will be bound to the winner of the statewide vote.

Sadly, we could have done this back in 2011. We had a GOP governor (then newly elected and with political capital to spend) and solid GOP majorities in both houses of the legislature. The Senate Majority leader and co-sponsors had introduced a bill to change how we allocated electoral votes to the system used in Maine and Nebraska: 2 for the statewide winner; 1 for the winner of each congressional district. Our governor was pledged to sign it if passed.

Our GOPe state chairman and George Will's editorials teamed up to ensure the bill never made it out of committee.

Without Pennsylvania's electoral votes being a Democrat given, the electoral math for the entire country would have changed. At minimum, the RAT party would have to spend money competing for 5-6 marginal congressional districts.

I will add that per the article, “Nearly 55,000 Pennsylvania voters switched registration from Democrat to Republican this year, about double the number of Republicans moving the opposite way. That’s an uptick in what had been an ongoing trend of the state Republican Party’s gaining former Democrats.”

To win states like PA, he needs to keep most of the existing Repubs AND win a hell lot of these types of Democrats. He may be doing the latter, but he’s losing a good chuck of Republicans. Not good enough.
