That usually happens when a) you know what it is you are talking about; b) you are well educated about the substance of what you are talking about; c) you fully believe in what you are talking about; and d) your heart is in it.
Trump came across as someone reading a speech someone else had written on a topic he wasn't completely up to speed on. And of course he couldn't resist the half dozens instances of bragging on himself. But Cruz and Trump on a stage for 30 minutes on nothing but Israel and Cruz would eat Trump alive.
