Five bodies hang from a pole suspended between two cranes, a public display which serves as a reminder to those who might contemplate a life of crime. They belonged to a gang of five robbers, all of whom were publicly beheaded before their corpses were hoisted high in the air, where they remained for days. The gruesome sight is one scene in a shocking documentary to be aired this week which sheds light on life in Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s bloodiest and most secretive countries.

When I first went to Japan in 1957 we were given ‘the speech’ — Steal from someone, don’t be surprised if you lose a hand.
‘It ain’t San Diego where the Shore Patrol goes to the main lockup in the Morning and collects the sailors that were there for various infractions’

I could only imagine how ‘life’ would be in a Japanese prison where only a few short years earlier we tried to exterminate them....
(Not saying we were ‘wrong’ after all - Without a Pearl Harbor chances were there would be no Hiroshima etc)

England in the middle ages. Gibbets. Heads on Pikes. Hanging, drawing and quartering. Some were robbers, but some were innocent or martyrs.

Punishments were severe in Puritan America, too. I don't know exactly when the turning point was. It seems to have been gradual from state to state, country to country. Except in places in the Middle East like Saudi Arabia.

We are descending into barbarism again in America. Isolated incidents here and there now. Tomorrow, who knows? Arming one's self may save your and loved one's lives, but even that can only go so far. Armed policeman killed and dying almost every day now just doing their jobs.

Maybe this has something to do with Lord Foul’s hatred of Churchill.

The middle east is a ‘’shame’’ culture. Lopped off hands, lopped off heads, American Soldiers weaponless on their knees in front of their enemies...all shame punishments.

This is one reason why we haven’t made any headway in the middle east. We don’t relate to this style of culture. We’ve done our best to eliminate it in our own culture where it DID exist.

It was once shameful to be an unmarried, pregnant female. Shameful to her, and shameful to her family. All were ostracized.

It was once shameful to be homosexual. We’ve tried to stem the stigma of that, also.

Once upon a time, a person’s name was important. One didn’t want to bring shame on a family name by having a bad reputation. It wasn’t just the shameful individual who suffered the stigma of a bad name, but the whole family.

It was once shameful to marry outside one’s race, or religion, and if one did, that couple was encouraged never to have children because the shame would be passed onto innocent children for all of their lives.

Once upon a time, it was shameful to be a white person who may have had a black ancestor 8 generations ago, much like hitler’s Jewish problem.

It was a shameful thing to get in trouble at school and have to go to the principle’s office. You were guaranteed that your parents would be notified and you would also be punished at home, as well.

If you were a child who shoplifted and got caught, it was a shameful thing to have to face the store owner or manager and confess your crime, and return if possible, the item you stole.

when Indians were killed, the early Europeans taught how to scalp..but it wasn’t heads they scalped. Today we stand shamed by that history, as well as the history of how we enslaved blacks.

We too still do have shame. It’s not called upon often, but try being a Trump supporter and see what attempted shame on you, tastes like.

Yup, we do still have it..so how can we criticize the middle east?

Excellent insights into shame, the worst punishment for children.

Here is an example of shame that motivated an eight year old kid to become homosexual at 16: eight year old was looking at the counter with many donuts, trying to pick out the best one carefully and joyfully. Then the kid picked a donut and proudly showed it to Dad. And then Dad hit him across the head and said, “That is a stupid donut and that was a stupid choice.”

While i’m in favor of the death penalty i’ve read enough stories from the middle east to get the idea it doesn’t deter as much crime as one would think.

i’m glad to see you post this. i had a literature course in college where the books we studied were broken down by “honor”, “shame”, and “duty” cultures, so that they could be understood in context. it really makes a huge difference when comparing and contrasting the literary works and character motivations from each culture. it also helps to explain the modern world. i tried to find out what this specific literary interpretation was called (i.e. if it was being taught by other professors at other schools), but google was of no use. it’s a fascinating way to understand the world though and i’d recommend anyone who is interested in seeing the invisible support beams of our culture, to learn about more about it and then re-read classic literature from the various culture periods in that context.
