Speaking in Salt Lake City home to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints headquarters Donald J. Trump questioned Mitt Romneys membership in the faith on Friday, asking a crowd at a rally, Are you sure hes a Mormon?
Mr. Romney, who was the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, comes from a prominent Mormon family, and he remains popular in Utah, which has a sizable Mormon population.
After first praising Mormons generally And do I love the Mormons, O.K.? Mr. Trump said. Do I love the Mormons? Mr. Trump added that he has many friends in Salt Lake City. But he noted pointedly that Mr. Romney, who has been urging Republicans to deny him the presidential nomination, is not one of them.
Did he choke? Did this guy choke? Hes a choke artist, Mr. Trump said, referring to Mr. Romneys loss to President Obama in 2012. Mr. Trump added, Are you sure hes a Mormon? Are we sure?
Though Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Romney in 2012, the two men are far from friendly now. Earlier this month, Mr. Romney delivered a scathing broadside against Mr. Trump, calling him a fraud and a phony and urging the Republican Party to unite around an alternative candidate.
And on Friday, Mr. Romney, who owns a home in Holladay, Utah, wrote in a Facebook message that he planned to vote for Senator Ted Cruz of Texas in the states Republican caucus Tuesday, as part of an effort to deny Mr. Trump the partys nomination at its convention in July.
Mr. Trump has questioned the religious affiliation of his rivals before, including Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon, who is a Seventh-Day Adventist.

Who are you to question Trump’s question?
LOL! Trump knows how to get free press!!
Hey, I’m Mormon and I asked myself the same question. I laughed when he said it.
Trump only has to say a few trigger words, and before you know it, the world is lit up with “TRUMP!”
Does elitist/socialist/collectivist Romneycare?
HOORAY Trump
He was merely asking a question that would result in evidence and an answer?
how does the Governor of Massachusetts get to vote in a Utah primary. The other question I would ask is are you sure he’s not a carpet bagger cloaked in Mormon skin
because Mormons aren’t supposed to be liars?
Trump thinks Mormons are smart and he joked with the crowd that Mitt is so dumb are you sure this is a Mormon?
He needs a basis to ask a question? Will you also have acceptable and unacceptable basis’s for asking the question?
Please.... It goes something like this.
1. After first praising Mormons generally...
So, Mormons are good people. Trump says Romney is not a good person. Thus, are you sure Romney is a Mormon? Not the best humor or argument, but that is Trump. For your part, at least make an attempt to connect the dots.
He’s about as much a Mormon as Dirty Harry Reid.
[On what basis does Trump question Romney’s religion?]
TRUMP has been asked the same question. Turn around is fair play.
On some of the stuff Romney says and does. What about refusing to campaign for the votes of 47% of the population four years ago? Aren't Mormons the ones who go out and spread the word as part of their faith? etc
So Mitt is atypical.
The bottom line is that Romney prostrated himself before Obama.
Do the Mormons even have "Onward Christian Soldiers" in their hymnal.....?
I do wish the Donald would grow up.
” on what basis does he question Romney’s faith?”
Trump’s tongue was in his cheek. Not sure where your head is.
Same goes for Glenn Beck.
Romney is one more politician whose religion sits lightly upon his shoulders.
