A Minnesota Senate committee has passed a bill that would increase penalties for certain hate crimes.
The Judiciary Committee on Friday approved the measure to stiffen penalties for felony assaults motivated by bias.
Sen. Ron Latz brought the bill in response to an incident in which a Somali woman was allegedly attacked for not speaking English at a restaurant. Asma Jama says she was attacked by a fellow patron at a Coon Rapids Applebee's restaurant in October because she was speaking Swahili.

I still can’t believe we have hate crimes in America.
This is madness.
And what’s worse is how they’re enforced. They’re only enforced in favor of one set of “victims”.
Coon Rapids?
“Coon Rapids”
Obviously a racist town!
The MN state Senate is controlled by Democrats. The MN state House is controlled by Republicans.
I assume the House will need to also pass this bill. I doubt it will happen. Hate crimes are entirely unevenly analyzed and charged. Only liberals who think a hate crime has occurred will press charges. And only favored groups seem to be able to claim a hate crime.
They are inherently undemocratic and represent unequal representation under the law.
I’m sure that poor, injured woman is back home to the safety of Somalia./s
.
Yes, I don’t mind so much that you kill me; just don’t do it for hateful reasons.
Will Minnesota increase the penalties for Love Crimes too?
The fine print probably says any crime of a minority against a white cannot be a hate crime.
“a bill that would increase penalties for certain hate crimes”
It says that right there! “Certain” hate crimes...
Thought crime.
This makes no sense. When I look it up, the languages spoken in Somalia are Somali (official), Arabic (official, according to the Transitional Federal Charter), Italian and English.
In Kenya they speak Somali. She must be one of Obama’s half-sisters or something.
Really? Does that include muslims?

They are thought crimes.
If the person charged with a “hate crime” says in court that he really likes the person then does he get a reduced sentence?
