A member of Hurlburt Field’s intelligence squadron is facing charges that he committed federal child pornography crimes on the base using his work computer.

Douglas J. Plate, 53, of Navarre, was arraigned in U.S. District Court in Pensacola on Thursday after a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging him with receipt, possession and access with intent to view child pornography.

According to a press release from U.S. Department of Justice, the indictment alleges that between August 2014 and December 2015, Plate knowingly received, possessed and accessed child pornography on his home computer. In addition, the indictment stated that between June and December 2015, Plate possessed and accessed child pornography at his office on Hurlburt Field.

The indictment stated the pornographic material involved a prepubescent minor and a minor who had not attained 12 years of age.

It has not been released if Plate is an active duty military member, a civilian Department of Defense employee, or a government contractor.

Information regarding Plate’s employment status was not immediately available. A request for comment from Hurlburt Field officials on the indictment was referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Plate’s trial is scheduled for May 9 at 8:30 in U.S. District Court in Pensacola.

According to Amy Alexander, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, Plate is currently released pending trial. He is required to wear an electronic monitoring device and has a nighttime curfew.

If convicted, Plate could face up to 20 years in prison for each count of the indictment.

A member of Hurlburt Field’s intelligence squadron . . . committed federal child pornography crimes on the base using his work computer.

He's in intelligence, and it didn't occur to him that accessing gross illegal photos through monitored computers was a bad idea? I'm glad someone that stupid won't be working Intel any more.

About 6 years ago, my daughter brought her laptop to me claiming it was really slow.
It was.
It took me the better part of a week to discover that some piece of malware had carved a 4GB partition from her 120GB hard drive and was using it as a porn site to distribute videos. I only discovered it when I noticed that the hard drive size did not match what it was supposed to be.
The first time I deleted the 4GB partition and added the space back to the original drive, it took only 1 day for the site to restore itself. I then had to walk through the boot up sequence until I found the critter and killed it. That didn’t even fix it. It had a backup that would put it back. I had to kill the backup as well, and from a different machine.

So, I now realize that anyone at anytime can have bad stuff on their PC and not know it. However, this guy appears to have been a willing participant.

That has to be one hell of an addiction. Not making excuses for the guy. But to do it on work hours, on a work computer, fully in view of the IT department? How do you cure that??? (Yes, that is a rhetorical question because we all know the “cure”)
