.@SenateMajLdr McConnell responds to SCOTUS nomination: "Give the people a voice in filling this vacancy" https://t.co/Yfu961lwAS
MSNBC (@MSNBC) March 16, 2016
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday shot down the idea of Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland getting a hearing.
McConnell insisted in a floor speech that the vacancy should be filled by the next president.
The next justice could fundamentally alter the direction of the Supreme Court and have a profound impact on our country, so of course the American people should have a say in the courts direction," he said.
"The Senate will continue to observe the 'Biden Rule' so the American people have a voice in this momentous decision. The American people may well elect a president who decides to nominate Judge Garland for Senate consideration. The next president may also nominate somebody very different. Either way, our view is this: Give the people a voice in filling this vacancy."
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) stood by McConnell's decision.
This has never been about who the nominee is. It is about a basic principle. Under our Constitution, the president has every right to make this nomination, and the Senate has every right not to confirm a nominee.
"I fully support Leader McConnell and Chairman [Chuck] Grassley's [R-Iowa] decision not to move forward with the confirmation process. We should let the American people decide the direction of the court."

Instead, they’ll make sure Hillary wins so she gets first dibs.
I’ll believe when I see it.
And we shall see how long these two guys stand by their statements.
If Hillary wins they can always vote to confirm between election day and the end of the session.
Merrick Garland was Jamie Gorelick’s principle Deputy
Obama would NEVER allow a straight shooter. Next......
Bork him in the committee but don’t let his nomination move from the committee to the floor.
Heads, Herself wins, tails, you lose anyway.
Is psychotic a limiting disability that would justify a written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office?
BELLING THE CAT
The Mice once called a meeting to decide on a plan to free themselves of their enemy, the Cat. At least they wished to find some way of knowing when she was coming, so they might have time to run away. Indeed, something had to be done, for they lived in such constant fear of her claws that they hardly dared stir from their dens by night or day.
Many plans were discussed, but none of them was thought good enough. At last a very young Mouse got up and said:
“I have a plan that seems very simple, but I know it will be successful. All we have to do is to hang a bell about the Cat’s neck. When we hear the bell ringing we will know immediately that our enemy is coming.”
All the Mice were much surprised that they had not thought of such a plan before. But in the midst of the rejoicing over their good fortune, an old Mouse arose and said:
“I will say that the plan of the young Mouse is very good. But let me ask one question: Who will bell the Cat?”
If NcConnell doesn’t keep his word, the people of Kentucky need to retire his azz....
Of course, I don’t even trust the pubbies on the committee to prevent his nomination from getting to the floor, and if Mitch allows the nomination to get to the floor I don’t trust the typical traitors like the Thad Cochran / Olympia Snowe cabal to vote against confirmation.
Oh barf.
Under our Constitution, the president has every right to make this nomination, and the Senate has every right not to confirm a nominee.
Then do your job and vote not to confirm him.
This nominee was chosen for one reason and one reason only, for the GOP to block and refuse to hold hearings and so the Democrats could use it as an example of Republican obstruction and refusal to do their job. I mean come on, a 63 year old white guy? This is not a typical Obama appointment. It's someone chosen solely because the Republicans should have a hard time opposing him and the Democrats can use it as a campaign issue.
They had that chance in 2014.
Will he run again in 2020??? He is getting long in tooth...
Turtle grew a pair???
No hearings, just an automatic approval.
