After graduating with honors from Harvard University and Harvard Law School, D.C. Circuit Judge Merrick Garland clerked for Judge Henry Friendly on the Second Circuit and then for Justice William Brennan.
Garland has spent most of his career in public service, much like Justice Samuel Alito. Both served as Assistant United States Attorneys and as high-level aides to Attorneys General. If nominated and confirmed to the Court, Garland would be the third sitting justice with prosecutorial experience (joining Justices Alito and Sotomayor).
But while Alito remained in government, Garland's career also included several years in private practice at Arnold & Porter, where he was named a partner in 1985. During this period, Garland also taught antitrust at Harvard Law School in 1986 and published articles " both on antitrust law " in the Harvard Law Review and Yale Law Journal.
In 1993, Garland was appointed as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice. In 1994, Garland became the Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General, with responsibilities that included the supervision of the Oklahoma City bombing case and the case against the Unabomber.
Nomination To D.C. Circuit
In 1995, President Clinton nominated Garland for an opening on the D.C. Circuit, and he received a hearing in December of that year. During that confirmation hearing, Garland was asked about "judicial activism." He answered that "[f]ederal judges do not have roving commissions to solve societal problems. The role of the court is to apply law to the facts of the case before it " not to legislate, not to arrogate to itself the executive power, not to hand down advisory opinion on the issues of the day."
Garland's nomination was stalled by Senate Republicans, not because of opposition to him but because of a dispute over whether to

Said to be weak on Second Amendment issues.
As in, seeks to roll back the Second Amendment.
In other words, he’s no effing good.
0dunga is baiting the Senate into holding confirmation hearings for this guy, then he’ll withdraw his nomination only to choose a female black activist and prepare to blast the Senate Republicans as ‘RACISTS’ for stopping the process.
I can’t remember the guy’s name but he is always on FOX talking about legal stuff. He just nailed it with what Obonzo is trying to pull. Obonzo is surrendering some of his “legacy” with this judge in order to embarrass the Republicans, hurt them in the elections and attack the political process currently being used by the Republicans to stop Obonzo from appointing another judge to the court. Some GOP Senators will start to go wobbly because of this nomination. The Kenyan wins another one. He’s running circles around the GOP.
Treat him the way same dignity and respect that Obama showed Justice Alito.
Garland clerked for liberal Supreme Court Justice William Brennan. That is all I need to know. Did anyone expect Obama to select one of Scalia’s former clerks? This guy needs to descend slowly in a ball of flames until Obama is settled safely in his Cuban beachfront retirement home
“... graduating with honors from Harvard University and Harvard Law School...”
As far as I’m concerned, this disqualifies him right off the bat. Right now, all 8 members of the Supreme Court graduated from either Harvard or Yale. I do not believe for one minute that we can not find a qualified Justice from some other University.
In what other field do ALL of the most highly qualified members come from just two Universities?
If the Supreme Court becomes some sort of insular “Old Boy’s Club” it will be a very bad thing for our country. In my humble opinion.
If you don’t know the secret handshake, you ain’t gonna make it.
The publicans better stand firm and not hold a hearing on this joker.
Right on. The GOP didn’t have to say a word. No boasting no throw downs no red lines. Then all they had to do was hold some semi-serious meetings until election time. But no, they all have to take to the airwaves and announce their strategy and show a path to their own inglorious surrender to Obama.

Demand McConnell stand his ground....Obama will try everything he can to get Obama's nominee passed while he is in office....including every dirty trick in his arsenal....for once the Republicans should keep the high ground...take action and keep reminding the Senate Majority Leader of his promise!
You would think that a man with years in the Senate would not make foolish statements when asked about liberal judges.
