Kokomo [Indiana] mayor signs LGBT protections ordinance, 5-4

KOKOMO, Ind. - Kokomo has become the latest Indiana community to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Council members voted 5-4 in favor of an ordinance protecting members of the LGBT community after what has been a contentious debate. Mayor Greg Goodnight signed the ordinance early Tuesday.

The overflow crowd tested the capacity of Kokomo's council chambers. By fire code, only 157 could fit inside. Police estimated 300 to 400 more people had to stand outside and await the final vote on the human rights ordinance.

The measure protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens from discrimination. It also bans discrimination based on marital status, age or veteran status.

"It's not something we want. It's something we need because it's only right," one supporter told council members.

"All we are trying to do is live our lives," another supporter said.

Several Indiana cities, including Columbus and Terre Haute, have adopted similar protections since last spring's uproar over Indiana's religious objections law.

Those local ordinances would have been barred by a Republican-sponsored bill that would have extended anti-discrimination protections only to lesbian, gay and bisexual people. But lawmakers pulled that bill from consideration last month.

So kids in Kokomo get a bearded kindergarten teacher in a dress who call him/herself "they." Sweet.

There’s no “protection” involved here. It is all about power over others.

Because gays who go see little boys in Thailand do not have a choice in their sexuality, but the little Thai boys were never forced and never victims.

Is it me or the gay protection rhetoric robs the pedophile and sexual predator control language?

So because some homophobe crazy beats on gays now gays are immune and considered the ultimate born that way victims without choices? What about he raped little kids or those adopted by gays? Do they have choices?

Somebody really ought to tell the Beach Boys where Kokomo really is.

Someone makes a lifestyle choice to be a sexual deviant and they are accorded special protections under the law. How does that reconcile with the Fourteenth Amendment?

My folks grew up there. I can only imagine how they would feel about this if they were still with us today. I have an uncle who still lives there. I am sure he is not at all happy.

I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just.

But it’s still okay to discriminate against white heterosexual male Christians and patriots.

“The measure protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens from discrimination. It also bans discrimination based on marital status, age or veteran status. “

1. Age? Discrimination based on age is embedded in the law.

2. When are they going to make it unlawful to discriminate and deny service to all the folks who like to go into places without wearing shirts or shoes? It’s discriminatory to not include them under anti-discrimination laws.

Summer of 1980 I commuted everyday from the northside of Indy to Kokomo to work on a Kroger/K Mart strip mall. Our crew rode together in a work van; we played euchre on the cooler on the way up and played euchre and drank beer out of the cooler on the way back. I learned how to drive a stick that summer when the foreman said: “We need someone to be the jobsite gopher, pick up materials and make deliveries. Do you know how to drive a stick?” The only word out of my mouth was “Yes.” I figured I just had to get that Ford pick up off the lot and across the street where I could practice a bit behind the Hardees where he couldn’t see me, and then if I made it to Kokomo Lumber and back, I was set for the summer. And that’s what happened, as I spent several afternoons driving around Kokomo listening to Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau broadcast Cub games on WGN.

I don’t remember a lot of openly gay people in Kokomo back then.

I live just outside there in an adjoining county. People are NOT happy about this. The 5-4 vote shows how divided they are.

You don't have a right to force your deviant morality on me. You don't have a right to tell me who I must serve and who I cannot ban.

Understood. I personally do not want to see anyone discriminated against (its just that some of this stuff like in classrooms with children and in public toilets... is just wrong.. and imho...unacceptable).

Its been awhile but I’d still have to suggest lunch at someplace other than the local BK there, ha!

Kroger and KMart are still there. KMart not worth going in to.

The Krogers is about the best in town. Wrong side of town for me, but the only place one can get fresh oysters on any given day. $.59/ea

My Dad in St. Joe Hospital just down the road and I’m heading there after I visit to get me a dozen.

It’s the one up on the northwest side, I think on north Alto road or something like that. I haven’t been there in a while; surprised the place is still standing.
