Obama administration loosens rules on Cuba travel, dollar

HAVANA — The Obama administration on Tuesday loosened rules on travel to Cuba and the Cuban government’s use of the dollar, removing obstacles to closer ties between the two countries five days before President Barack Obama makes a historic trip to Havana.

The administration announced Tuesday that Americans can now take “people-to-people” trips to Cuba on their own instead of on expensive group tours. That means any American can legally go to Cuba as long as they fill out a form asserting that their trip was for educational purposes instead of tourism. The measure is expected to help fill demand for commercial flights that U.S. airlines hope to launch in coming months.

The new measures also allow U.S. banks to process Cuban government transactions that pass even momentarily through the U.S. banking system. A ban on those transactions crippled Cuba’s ability to buy and sell goods internationally and become one of Cuba’s biggest complaints about the U.S. trade embargo on the island.

Tuesday’s action is the fifth round of measures aimed at punching holes in the embargo on Cuba through executive action while Congress leaves the embargo itself in place. More than a year after Obama and President Raul Castro announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations, U.S. companies can now manufacture goods in Cuba, export to the Cuban government and fly regularly scheduled flights to Cuba. The Starwood hotel chain says it soon expects to get U.S. approval to manage hotels in Cuba.

By doing it in advance there's no need to ask for anything in return. I see "educational" cruise stops and "educational" resorts in Cuba's near future.

Before the revolution, Cuban lakes were stocked with Florida bass. They're now considered an invasive species and are YUGE.

Those lakes are going to get filled with bass boats.

After Clinton normalized relations and opened trade with Vietnam, Hanoi is less communist and easier to run a business in than many US cities.

Well, off topic, but I’ve heard that prostitution is big in Cuba. So many Cuban people are so poor, that many women, including ordinary housewives, turn to prostitution with visitors who pay in hard currency. A dirty secret of Cuba is that there are state stores which take Cuban money, but then there are other stores which only take hard currency, which also have better quality items for sale. Go figure that a communist paradise would have a two tiered economy.

When Trump says obama/democrap deals are losers he means it!

Cuba said it would welcome President Barack Obama to Havana later this month, but the Communist government had no intention of changing its policies in exchange for normal relations with the United States.

One of the mostly loudly boasted achievements of the Cuban Revolution is that women in Cuba, many of whom earned their living as prostitutes in the 40’s and 50’s, would never again have to bear that indignity in order to be housed or to feed their families.

Flash forward five decades and they are back to square one.

Liberalism always generates the EXACT OPPOSITE of its stated intent.

That would be my bet, the rationale being that our 99 year lease agreement has expired.

he is going to give it to them then pay them to erase the damage the base did to their paradise with on going funding for the next 100 years.

Then he will lick the bottom of Castro’s boot.

If Castro keeps ObOzO, we can replace the detention facility at Gitmo with old Rust Buckets that may sink.
