Donald Trump walks back suggestion of paying legal fees for man accused of punching protester
Business Insider ^ | 03/15/2016 | Colin Campbell

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump denied on Tuesday that he said he was looking into paying the legal fees for a man who is accused of punching a protester at one of Trump's rallies. "I didn't say that. I haven't looked at it yet. And nobody's asked me to pay for fees," Trump said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

A man was filmed sucker punching a demonstrator at a Trump rally last week in North Carolina. John McGraw, 78, is reportedly facing assault charges in the attack.

On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Trump said he "actually instructed my people to look into" paying McGraw's legal bills. Trump also said he wanted to see the "full tape" and noted that the protester was "very loud, very disruptive."

But during his Tuesday "Good Morning America" interview Trump appeared to be far less inclined to get involved.

"Somebody asked me the question. And I hadn't even seen it. So I never said I was going to pay for fees," he recalled.

"You said you were 'looking into it,'" host George Stephanopoulos pressed. "And I'm just saying, if you're open to that, wouldn't by paying those fees, wouldn't that be rewarding violence?"

Trump replied:

"Well, maybe so. And maybe that's why I wouldn't do it. I don't condone violence at all. I looked and I watched and I'm going to make a decision, but I certainly don't condone violence. And maybe you're right. And maybe that's why I wouldn't do it."

Trump has been harshly criticized in recent days for his violent campaign-trail rhetoric.

We all misspeak at times.
That’s one of the reasons I like Donald. He’s like one of us.

Yep, the media loves to misquote Mr Trump because they know there are plenty of idiots out there who will fall for it.

Y’all aren’t even bothering to mix the Kool-Aid with water anymore. Just pouring the powder from the packet directly into your mouths.

““He has extensive political knowledge, and he chooses to support good people, so I don’t understand all the fear about him,” Giuliani said. “

He didn’t misspeak. He made a promise that proved politically troublesome, so he bailed out on it.
This is what The Donald does.

Of course he is. The guy doesn’t mean anything he says. He is simply leading the sheep with whatever words are necessary. Probably getting a big laugh out of it all. He will be the first to toast President Clinton next January.

I just meant maybe it wasn’t such a good idea for him to offer to pay his fine for all to hear. I’m all for Donald. I love him.

What the media hates about Trump is that he will give an answer to a question. The media will then take that answer and shape it into a story about what Trump does or doesn't believe. They will then later ask another question that they think supports the story they made up and Trump will answer that question truthfully as well.

To people used to dealing with politicians this has got to be infuriating. Politicians get trapped into taking intractable positions no matter how stupid it makes them look. Their best defense has always been to just avoid answering the question. None of that game plan works on Trump.

Self Defense is different from throwing the first punch. Trump is talking about self defensive moves.
