At first like you, I thought he was challenging them in an adversarial way but what I later found by sticking with the discussion, he was trying to get an answer he knew was there but the caller was not articulating it. He kept on hoping the caller would see where he was trying to take it by getting them to say it and not to put words in their mouths.
