Out of fear or love, Trump driving Democrats, independents to Ohio’s GOP primary (Kasich)
Columbus Dispatch ^ | March 10 2016 | Jessica Wehrman

Voters for years have occasionally opted to take part in the more interesting primary contest. In some cases, their votes have been “spoilers” — meant to give their party’s candidate a weaker opponent in the general election. That was the case in 2008, when conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh urged Republicans to vote in the Democratic primary to extend that bruising campaign & attempt to deny Obama the nomination.

In Ohio, Republican Chairman Matt Borges said that some of this year’s crossover voting will be caused by affection for Kasich, a two-term governor. In Kasich's 2014 gubernatorial re-election, he won in Lucas, Cuyahoga and Mahoning counties, which are Democratic strongholds, Borges noted.

“You don’t do that unless you have some crossover appeal,” he said.

That’s not to say Trump isn’t also spurring some Democrats to vote Republican this year because they are drawn to his candidacy.

Mahoning County Republican Party Chairman Mark Munroe, a self-described die-hard Kasich supporter who campaigned for him in New Hampshire, is taking calls nearly every day from Democrats wanting to vote in the Republican primary.

“And nine times out of 10, or 19 out of 20, you get the sense they are doing so because they want to vote for Trump,” he said. “It’s been fascinating to watch.” “He’s getting Democrats to cross over,” Munroe said of Trump, “but he’s also getting a large number of unaffiliated voters — people who don’t participate in primaries.”

In Mahoning County, a northeastern Ohio county that includes Youngstown, 8,639 people have asked for absentee ballots. Of those, 759 were Democrats asking for the Republican ballot, and 1,053 were unaffiliated voters asking for the GOP ballot.

“We could have 4- or 5- or 6,000 new Republicans in Mahoning County,” Munroe said. “Which would be a very significant number.”

One additional paragraph from article (much more at link).

In Franklin County, meanwhile, 581 past Democratic voters requesting absentee ballots have sought the Republican ballot. Among the unaffiliated absentee voters, however, more have asked for a Democratic primary ballot — 7,382, compared with 4,638 for a Republican ballot.

That last bit sounds like some squishy Republicans might be feeling the Bern.

Which is excellent news.

Curious if those that were requesting democratic ballots actually know they need to have republican ballots to vote for Trump in the primary?

Were it a normal year, Kristen Dodd of Bay Village, Ohio, would vote for Democrat Bernie Sanders on March 15. But this year is different.
“I would like to prevent Donald Trump from winning Ohio,” she said.

Did people always use their votes as a strategy or did that start with Rush and his operation chaos?

If a registered voter (Democrat) wants to vote another party, the process is to go to the precinct and ask to vote Republican.

They will give you a ballot for the requested party. The voter would remain on that party roll until they vote the next time and could switch back to being a Democrat.

Not sure how often this happens.

In the last 48 hours kasich has promoted a Democrat platform. I think he is trying to win this by directly appealing to Democrats.

The Dem race is a hot one in OH. Any Dem crossing over to vote against Trump has a hole in their head. I’m going guess this is journolister manufactured BS.

Kasich made some comment during one of the debates about being on the democrat ticket. He’s toast!
