During the cold war, in the 70s, the Soviets lost a sub and the CIA set up an operation to try to recover it under the guise of a commercial sea mineral hunting expedition funded by Howard Hughes. They managed to get hold of the sub and tried to pull it up intact into the massive ship but it broke apart. I think they recovered some remains and they gave them a proper burial with the Soviet anthem and everything.
So go get it, boys!

It was a good book and I was amazed at how much they revealed. Though when they said “unfortunately the sub broke up and they weren’t able to recover any of the good stuff” I thought “uh huh, sure....” :-)

When I was in the surface Navy, my Chief would always say,” you’re never more than 7 miles from land at sea - it’s just at the bottom of the ocean.”

How do you stop North Korea from exporting fissionable material or an Iranian designed and NK tested nuke from being transported by submarine during a blockade?
By sinking it of course and blaming it on naval incompetence to the world. Heck, even North Korea would believe that, except for those that really new what that sub was carrying. Question is will someone go down to the bottom to retrieve and analyze that warhead design?
