Democratic Congressman Gary Condit of Modesto has canceled a fund-raiser featuring Republican colleague John Kasich, blaming "narrow- minded zealots" for their "mindless" opposition to the affair.
Kasich's willingness to appear on behalf of a Democrat had touched off protests among Republicans, with some suggesting that he be stripped of his powerful post as chairman of the House Budget Committee.
Condit, a conservative Democrat and a close friend of Kasich, said he canceled the event after it became clear his colleague was being "vilified by narrow-minded zealots . . . (who) believe the sun rises and sets according to partisan affiliation."

Condit was tangled up in the Chandra Levy disappearance case in DC before they charged a drifter with her murder. The only thing that knocked this story off the front page was Sept 11th.
None that care.
John Kasich Confuses George Stephanopoulos: ‘I’m a Democrat’

Republican presidential candidate John Kasich confused George Stephanopoulos on Wednesday with a story that included the line “I’m a Democrat.” In an amusing moment, the Good Morning America co-host, himself a former Democratic operative, appeared puzzled or, perhaps, excited: “You’re a Democrat?”
The exchange occurred after Kasich, who scored a second place finish in New Hampshire, spoke of Reagan Democrats. He related, “Most of these conservative Democrats when they see a socialist winning, they’re like, ‘What’s happened to my party? I mean, I’m a Democrat, but I’m certainly not a socialist.’”
Stephanopoulos paused and then inquired, “You’re a Democrat?” This seemed to confuse Kasich, who attempted to clarify: “I said we can attract the Democrats, George, because — well, look, my father was a Democrat and I’m a strong conservative Republican.”
This isn’t the first mixup for Kasich. On February 5, while talking to a Democratic voter in New Hampshire, the Ohio governor exclaimed, “I ought to be running in a Democrat primary. I got more Democrats for me — you have any Republican friends?”

Kasich and Condit used to host “parties”. This all came out during the Chandra Levy investigation. Kasich was single at the time. One detail I remember is that the apartment was searched by the police and when luminol was applied to the floors and walls, all kinds of “bodily fluids” appeared. Use your own imagination.
That's all I ever need to know about him.

COndit was not re elected.
