I ran across this presentation of this story. The author tweeted the Washington Post photographer whose picture is referenced here.
The photographer (whose credits are on the getty image) first denied being there, then said he witnessed no assult. The tweets and photo are below.

Yes, the photog lied about being there.
Also Ben Terris WP reporter who was standing near Fields and the originator of the “thrown down” version of events.
