Cesar Millan, the ‘Dog Whisperer,’ investigated for animal cruelty — against a pig

The television personality is now being investigated for possible animal cruelty, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Sheriff’s deputies with Los Angeles County Animal Control visited Millan’s Dog Psychology Center in Santa Clarita, La., Thursday evening, but he was away on a business trip, a family member told NBC.

The animal welfare officials had received several inquiries after the episode with Simon, which showed the dog biting a pig’s ear during a training session led by Millan.

A 24-hour notice has been issued, requiring him to contact the investigators, according to NBC. They want to know what has happened to the pig since the episode’s filming.

The contentious incident took place inside a fenced yard, where Millan was conditioning Simon to become accustomed to the pigs’ company. This concluded with Simon bounding towards a pig which appeared to be restrained by one of Millan’s assistants. Simon proceeded to bite the pig and leave the area around its ear bloodied.

“Simon ripped the ear off the pig,” said Simon’s owner, Sandy. “It was a bloodbath.”

Wow... from the headline, you would think that Millan had been running a pig-fighting ring. The text indicates an unfortunate incident, maybe a bit of short-sightedness in that Mr. Millan did not muzzle the dog. But it certainly is not cruelty.

On a side note, I wonder why the dog needed to be conditioned to tolerate pigs? There can’t be that many situations that put dogs and pigs together.

Perhaps a bit of tenderizing?

The dog owner has a pet pig that was not safe around his dog it seems.

"There can’t be that many situations that put dogs and pigs together."

Pigs and dogs make for sitcom gold.

Pigs are food. I grew up on a farm with a dozen pigs, and while they’re cute as a button when they’re babies, they’re not ideal as pets when they’re fully grown.

We had 6 dogs on the ranch, 4 of them were dobermans, one was a GSD, and the old man was a bloodhound. The GSD did a fantastic job as a herder, as they are wont to do, and the dobermans followed suit. You wouldn’t deliberately put them together, but dogs have been used for centuries to help herd all sorts of farm animals, pig included.

Ah, thanks.

I didn’t read the full article because the text after the headline sounded like “Move along, nothing to see here.” Maybe I should read the full article more often.

Yes, it reads like Cesar Millan bit the pigs ear off.

That's journalism today.

Pigs are food.

Agreed. I do not understand the desire to keep a pig as a pet.

Mini pigs are as loyal as dogs and just as smart.

“Mini pigs are as loyal as dogs and just as smart.”

Are there any advantages to owning a pig instead of a dog? If not just get a dog.

“It was a bloodbath.”

C'mon, it was at least a million billion time worse than that.

So, a dog bit a pig’s ear.
As the farmer who owned a three legged pig said, “That pig is so good you don’t want to eat him all at one time!”

Annabelle didn't like the Newfoundland dog on the farm but she was fine with Sam...

They'd go for walks together...here she tries to convince Sam of the joys of mud-bathing...

They got along very well...sometimes a little too well...
