Alzheimer’s disease could be caused by viruses like herpes, a group of renowned dementia experts have warned, as they call for urgent investigation into the link.
The worldwide team of 31 senior scientists and clinicians, which include specialists from Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Manchester Universities and Imperial College, have written an editorial which suggests that microbes are the major cause of dementia.
The herpes virus - the type which causes cold sores - and chlamydia bacteria are named as the major culprits, as well as a type of corkscrew-shaped bacteria called spirochaete.

Professor Douglas Kell, Manchester University Currently most scientists are trying to find treatments which prevent the build of sticky amyloid plaques and misfolded tau proteins in the brain which prevent neurons from communicating with each other, leading to memory loss and cognitive decline.
But in an the editorial in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, it is suggested that it is a viral or bacterial infection which triggers the plaque build-up in the first place. Targeting them specifically with antimicrobial drugs could halt dementia.
Professor Douglas Kell of the University of Manchester’s School of Chemistry, said “We are saying there is incontrovertible evidence that Alzheimer’s Disease has a dormant microbial component. We can’t keep ignoring all of the evidence.”

Herpes could be chicken pox, which most people over twenty-five or so were exposed to; most of the younger got the vaccine.
Isn’t chicken Pox also a “herpes” type virus?

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus I. STD herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus II.
Yes, chicken pox is also caused by a herpes virus. Once you get it, it never goes away.
Many herpes virus infections never go away. Some herpes viruses are deadly.
I’d like to see the correlation with those who have had Chicken Pox/Shingles to those that developed Alzheimer’s.
Not just single folks. I know someone who got it from his wife, well, ex-wife now. He calls it the gift that keeps giving.
It won’t happen. Unless there’s South Park style penises flying off as a short term consequence of actions taken the licentious won’t hardly take notice.

You are right. The article does not differentiate between which form of herpes virus is linked with Alzheimer’s or that they know for sure, just that there is an apparent link with viruses or even bacteria. They are calling for more studies into these links. It was a very interesting article. I had not heard this before.
